  2. Bhutan, officially the Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked country in Asia. Located in the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is geopolitically in South Asia. Thimphu is its capital and largest city

  3. The charming small town of Paro lies on the banks of the Paro (or Pa) Chhu. Paro is a historic town with many sacred sites and historical buildings scattered throughout the area The Paro Dzong

  4. © The main street, only built in 1985, is lined with colourfully painted wooden shop fronts and restaurants

  5. Paro main street Paro Dzong ranks as a high point of Bhutanese architecture. The massive buttressed walls that tower over the town are visible throughout the valley. It was formerly the meeting hall for the National Assembly and now, like most dzongs, houses both the monastic body and district government offices, including the local courts. Most of the chapels are closed to tourists but it's worth a visit for its stunning architecture and views

  6. The bridge across the river leading to the Paro Dzong is a traditional covered cantilever bridge The construction of the Paro Dzong was started in 1644 by the order of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of modern day Bhutan

  7. Paro Dzong’s full name is Ringpung Dzong, which means ‘the fortress of the heap of jewels’

  8. In the 15th century, two brothers (descendants of Phajo Drugom Zippo, the founder of the Drukpa Kagyupa School in Bhutan) named Gyelchok and Gyelzom lived in the Paro valley. Gyelzom established himself at Gantakha Monastery; his brother Gyelchok travelled to Tibet to study theology. When Gyelchok came back to Paro, he was not respected in the community due to the many years he had spent studying without any money. His brother Gyelzom, renounced his existence, in his eyes a “beggar” could no be part of the family

  9. Gyelchok moved to Humrelkha, a place which took its name from the guardian deity of Paro, Humrel Goemba

  10. Gyelchok then built a small structure that would later become the Paro Dzong. Gyelchok’s descendants, who controlled a large portion of the valley, are well known through Bhutanese history as the ‘Lords of Humrel’

  11. In 1645, the “Lords of Humrel” relinquished their small fort to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, thus recognizing his religious and political prowess.

  12. Immediately, the Zhabdrung began construction of a much more superior fortress and in 1646, the Dzong was consecrated

  13. Details of Paro Dzong. Paro Dzong is listed as a tentative site in Bhutan's Tentative List for UNESCO inclusion

  14. Unlike most of the other Dzongs in Bhutan, Paro Dzong survived the massive 1897 earthquake mostly intact, though it was damaged by fire in 1907

  15. Some scenes in the 1993 film Little Buddha were filmed in this dzong

  16. The Driglam Namzha is the official behaviour and dress code of Bhutan. Under the Driglam Namzha, men wear a heavy knee-length robe tied with a belt, called a gho, which is folded in such a way to form a pocket in front of the stomach

  17. In 1989 a strict dress code was enforced across Bhutan, with violators subject to heavy fines. Men were required to wear a Gho, a knee-length robe tied at the waist, and women a Kira, an ankle-length sari-like garment accompanied by a light jacket known as a Tego

  18. Inside Rinpung Dzong are fourteen shrines and chapels

  19. The 'Tree of Life‘, an elaborate 4-sided carving depicting the history of Buddhism, on the 6th floor of Ta Dzong (the former watchtower which is now Bhutan’s National Museum)

  20. A great annual festival or tshechu is held at Rinpung Dzong from the eleventh to the fifteenth day of the second month of the traditional Bhutanese lunar calendar (usually in March or April of the Gregorian calendar)

  21. At the top of the hill is the old watchtower that was renovated in 1968 to house the National Museum
