THERAPY • Treats or relieves a disorder • Action not emphasised • COUNSELLING • Diagnose emotional problems • and work on healing these wounds • Looks at past to present • CONSULTING • Provides answers and solutions • Problem/issue solving • Usually experts in that field • TEACHING • Develops thinking and capabilities • How and what of an action COACHING • TRAINING • Instruction • Teaches the client how to do • something • It is more a monologue than a dialogue • MENTORING • Passes on advice of a person who • has been there before • Expert in his field

Going somewhere ? • A therapistwill explore what is stopping you driving your car. • A counsellor will listen to your anxieties about driving. • A mentor will advise and share tips from his experience of driving cars. • A consultant will offer solutions how you can drive the car. • A coach will ask you where you really want to go….

Definitions of COACHING • INTERNATIONAL COACH FEDERATION partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. • INTERNATIONAL COACH ACADEMY Coaching involves dialogue between a coach and a client with the aim of helping the client to obtain a fulfilling life. This is achieved by helping the client establish what is important to them and by clarifying values. With the client’s input the coach co-creates value based goals and a plan to achieve them. Through collaboration, the coach supports the client to achieve these goals.

  19. Co-active coaching Refers to the fundamental nature of a coaching relationship in which the coach and client are active collaborators. This relationship is an alliance between two equals for the purpose of meeting the client’s needs. Four cornerstones: • The client is naturally creative, resourceful and whole • The agenda comes from the client • The coach dances in the moment • Co-active coaching addresses the client’s whole life Five contexts of coaching: • Listening • Intuition • Curiosity • Action/learning • Self-management
