  3. Accomplishments • He helped form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.(SCLC) • He successfully led a bus boycott of 1956. • Became president of the Inter-Civic Council. • Led boycotts along Dr. King and Ralph Abernathy for equal rights mostly in the South.

  5. Background Knowledge *Born February 17, 1914 in Bluefield, West Virginia. *Son of a coal miner. *Wanted to become a preacher at an early age. *He became a preacher at the age of 15. *He fought for equal right during the 60’s and the 70’s.

(age 15)*Steele moves to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College.*Steele began to form bus boycotts and formed the Inter-Civic Council in 1956.*Moves to Tallahassee to help out with bus problems by forming more bus boycotts.*Formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference alongside Dr. King Jr. of which he became Vice-President of.
