The Snare of Sin (5:29-30) • Sin ensnares, traps and enslaves all who yield to its temptation • “causes you to sin” – ensnares you • “…the stick in the trap that springs and closes the trap when the animal touches it” • The nature of sin, Heb. 3:13; 11:25; Rom. 6:23 • See its sinfulness! (Rom. 7:13, 7-8)

  6. The Severity of Repentance(5:29-30) “It is not mutilating of the body that Christ enjoins, but control of the body against sin. The man who plays with fire will get burnt. Modern surgery finely illustrates the teaching of Jesus. The tonsils, the teeth, the appendix, to go no further, if left diseased, will destroy the whole body. Cut them out in time and the life will be saved.” (Robertson) • Mark 9:42-48

  7. The Severity of Repentance(5:29-30) • Do away with sin, Rom. 6:6; Col. 2:11; 3:9 • Repentance: Change of heart, 2 Cor. 7:10 • Fruit of repentance: Change of life, Rom. 6:13, 16-18; Col. 3:5-10 • When sin is removed we can serve the Lord with our body, 1 Cor. 6:13, 19-20; Rom. 12:1-2

The Surrender of Salvation(5:29-30) • Crucify self in order to live by faith, Gal. 2:20; Phil. 3:7-8 • Deny self, Lk. 9:23; Matt. 19:10-12 • Practical, specific steps to prevent, guard against and overcome sin (1 Pet. 4:1-2) • Pornography: End accessibility • Alcohol and drugs: Abstinence • Adultery: Guard your heart with fidelity

  9. The Suffering of Hell(5:29-30) • Sin’s punishment: Eternal ruin in hell • “Cast into hell”, Matt. 10:28 • Punishment is not annihilation, Mk. 9:43ff • Unending pain • Continual corruption • Fire is never quenched • Purity’s reward: Eternal life, Mk. 9:43 (Rom. 2:7)
