Function and Environmental Issues • Function: The United States Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act is a set of laws passed by congress giving authority to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to oversee the safety of food, drugs, and cosmetics. • Environmental Issues Affected: Under the FFDAC, food is prohibited from sale if it has any harmful pesticides on it, which causes food production companies to stop putting out harmful pesticides. The FFDCA requires the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to set maximum residue limits ("tolerances") for these pesticides on food.
