  1. Collaboration in Support of Economic Development LA-UR 05-6587

  2. What is HyTeP? HyTeP is an alliance representing industry, business, research laboratories, universities, and government, working together to enhance the economic development of New Mexico and the nation through a cooperative focus on hydrogen and fuel cell research, development, demonstration, and commercialization.

  3. How did HyTeP Come About? • Two LANL staffers played “What if?” • What if we were able to find cost-effective solutions to some of the problems impacting the hydrogen economy? • What if we pushed our existing comparative advantage for the benefit of the state? • What if we got everyone behind this effort?

  4. What are HyTeP’s Goals? By building on the world-leading hydrogen and fuel cell R&D performed at the state’s national laboratories for more than 25 years, HyTeP aims to create a cluster of research, engineering, development, service, manufacturing, and business organizations that will make New Mexico the worldwide center for hydrogen and fuel cell development.

  5. What has HyTeP Done?

  6. What has HyTeP Done? • Focused attention on NM. • Created awareness of just how broad the state’s assets are. • Attracted the attention of foreign investors and research companies. • Worked successfully with others to obtain Legislative funding and support as a basis for hi-tech economic development.

  7. What has HyTeP Done? • Cloned MiniTeP and BioTeP…but that is another story.

  8. Have there been problems? • This is a volunteer organization with limited time and little money. • We aren’t professional lobbyists. • Egos sometimes get in the way.

  9. Is this a model? • Perhaps. • Is regional economic development part of your role? Do you have the time and money to devote to this? • Does the region you support have a strong comparative advantage in a technology sufficient to form the basis for an economic development cluster?

  10. Is this a model? • How portable is the technology? • Does your comparative advantage imply or require proximity? • Is what you have unique? • Go for it!
