  1. Status of the Conductor Development L. Oberli • Status of the manufacturing for Alstom • Status of the manufacturing for SMI

  2. Alstom : FabricationStatus of step 2 Alstom had encountered serious difficulties during step1 and step 2 with breakages occurring during drawing and starting already at large diameter. The origin of the breakages is likely due to a lack of cohesion between the components in particular between the Nb tube and the copper can. To solve the problems related to the lack of cohesion, new sub-elements obtained by warm extrusion were produced early 2007 and were stacked in 2 final billets, one with 78 sub-elements and one with 246 sub-elements. Drawing completed successfully beginning of January 2008.

  3. Alstom : FabricationStatus of step 2 1st Billet with 78 sub-elements drawn without breakages to 1.25 mm - > piece length of 1300 m. 2nd Billet with 246 sub-elements drawn with only few breakages to 1.25 mm - > piece length of 860 m. Cohesion problems solved with the sub-elements produced by extrusion. No Ic results expected in January, samples are in the oven for heat treatment.

  4. Alstom : Summary of status for step 2

  5. Alstom : Completion of step 2 At least on other billet with 246 sub-elements will be launched under fabrication with the sub-elements obtained by extrusion, copper can already ordered. Optimisation of the wire will be done in February to get the best Jc. Expected completion of step 2 in April with a cabling test to qualify the strand for the final strand production.

  6. SMI : Status of contract EAS has started the total strand production. 12.7 km of strand have to be produced by EAS to complete the contract. Due to the transfer of equipment from Enschede to Hanau, EAS has difficulties to deliver all the strand for the end of February 2008 as foreseen. A first billet (~ 3 km) is being fabricated to be delivered for beginning of March. The remaining part (3 billets)will be delivered in July. The cabling will be done under CERN’s responsibility.
