  2. Día de muertos “El día de muertos” es una celebración en México para honorar a los muertos. “The day of the dead” is a celebration in Mexico in honour of the deceased . La celebración esta dividida en dos partes: The celebration is divided in two parts: 1o de Noviembre, se celebra a todos los santos y a los niños difuntos. 1st of November, is to celebrate all saints and the deceased children.

  3. 2o de Noviembre, se celebra a los difuntos y la familia hace un “altar” para conmemorar la muerte de la persona fallecida, asimismo van a la iglesia y al panteón a visitar las tumbas. 2nd of November, is for the deceased and the people do an “altar” to commemorate the dead person, they go to church and to the cemetery to visit their graves.

  4. El altar El “altar” es una ofrenda para el fiel difunto y tiene un gran significado, ya que se cree que ayuda a los muertos a llevar un buen camino durante la muerte. The “altar” is an offering to the deceased relatives and it has an important meaning because it is believed that it helps the deceased to find their way.

  5. Las ofrendas que se ponen dentro del altar son los siguientes:The offerings that are placed in the altar are as follow: Cuatro velas principales en forma de cruz. Four lighted candles forming a cross. Una olla de barro con hierbas aromaticas. A terracotta pot filled with herbs.

  6. Los elementos que debe tener un altar son: The components that the altar should have are: Cadenas de papel morado y amarillo que significan la unión entre la vida y la muerte. Paper chains of purple and yellow that signify the connection between life and dead. Papel picado que da color que da colorido y alegría de vivir. Coloured cut up paper to add colour and happiness.

  7. Las flores son la bienvenida para el alma; la flor blanca representa el cielo, la flor amarilla la tierra y la morada el luto. The flowers are to welcome the souls white ones represents heaven, the yellow ones the earth and the purple ones the sorrow.

  8. Velas que representan la ascensión del espíritu, también significan luz guía del camino. Candles’ lights represent the ascension of the spirit, they also represent light to guide their way. Lienzo blanco y nuevo que representa la pureza y el cielo. White new linen represents purity and heaven. El maíz representa la cosecha. Corn represents the crops.

  9. El cirio representa el alma sola. The big candle represents the single soul. Incienso de copal cuyo humo simboliza el paso de la vida al muerte. The inces symbolizes the path between life and dead. Las frutas son la ofrenda que nos brinda la naturaleza. Fruit are nature’s gifts to us. Las calaveras de azúcar que son una costumbre indígena. The sweets in the shape of skulls are an Indian custom.

  10. El agua que da vida y energía para el camino. Water to give life and energy along the way. Los platillos con las que se trata de agradar al difunto. The dishes are to please the deceased. Fotografía de la persona a quien se dedica el tributo. A photograph of the deceased. Un cristo para que haya bendiciones. A crucifix to bring blessings. Una cruz de cal que simboliza a los cuatro puntos cardinales. A cross made out of chalk that symbolizes the four compas points. Sal para el cuerpo no se corrompa. Salt so that the body does not decompose.

  11. Un camino desde la puerta de la entrada hasta el altar formado con la flor de cempasúchil. A path made out of flowers from the entrance to the altar. Una vara para liberar al muerto del demonio y los malos espíritus. A rod to free the deceased from the devil and the bad spirits. Objetos personales del difunto. Personal belongings of the deceased.

  12. Las personas velan al difunto durante la noche en la tumba esperando que el espíritu de su muerto baje y disfrute de su ofrenda. The relatives keep watch during the night, waiting for the deceased’s soul comes to savour the offerings placed on the altar.
