  1. D700 Reprogramming Project Miles Mann WF1F Marex-MG September 27, 2006

  2. Keep it Simple • Current D700 program is too complex for the ISS crew to comprehend • Too many un-used and back door options were installed on the ISS D700 • Current PM function button software has become corrupted • According to “Frank Bauer” the D700 needs a complete reload to become fully operational again

  3. Repair Plan • A new PC needs to be flow to fix the D700 • Tentative arrival of PC Q2 2007 • Limited voice activity with the D700 is possible until the reload next year. • ISS crew will perform the software reload

  4. Issues • Many of the PM buttons have become corrupted over the past 3 years • When placed in a mode such as cross band repeater, the D700 will intermittently Pop-out of the selected mode • Packet modes suffer from long delays that maybe caused by un-used Back-door full duplex modes • Default power mode is 10 watts, should be 5 watts

  5. Issues cont. • Mounting table is blocking heat transfer • The D700 Radio, over heated on at least one occasion. Normal running temperature is Unknown. • Packet is enabled for all modes, even during Voice modes • Need to add a channel combination for SSTV that does not have Packet enabled

  6. Reload • Since a Reload is now required, lets fix some of the problems with the D700 software • Convert the D700 from a PM button system to a simpler Channel configuration • Disable the un-used Back door channels • Disable the second receiver

  7. Changes • The Packet performance may improve once full-duplex back doors have been disabled • Change display to show active Frequency • Set 5 watts as default power levels

  8. Simplify the PM buttons • For Voice mode, set PM1, PM2 & PM3, all set for Packet Off, Power 5 watts and Radio #2 OFF • For Packet, set PM4, Packet ON, Power 5 watts and Radio #2 OFF • PM5, Set for Cross Band Repeater, Packet OFF and Power 5 watts

  9. Extensive Testing Required • Packet APRS • Packet Unproto • Packet Email with Non-D700 TNC’s • Slow Scan TV • Simplex Voice operations • Odd split voice operations • Cross band voice operations

  10. Things that can’t be fixed There are some problems with the D700 that the reprogramming can not fix. The TNC in the D700 is only compatible with other D700 TNC’s. The D700 does not send out Message Body packet acknowledgements. All other TNC’s require the Message Body packet acknowledgement. The D700 can still receive mail from other TNC’s, however the efficiency is significantly reduced because of the D700 proprietary format.

  11. Benefits • The Single Radio D700 will be easier for the crew to use • The Crew knows what a channel number is, but not what a PM button does • Improved packet perforce • Increase stability of the D700 • Cooler running with Radio #2 disabled

  12. Time Line • Code / channel goals Nov 06 • First spin of code Dec 06 • Complete code test Jan 06 • Deliver PC and Code TBD
