What can my child expect in Second Grade? • Students are given alphabetical grades: A=100-90% B= 89-80% C= 79-75% D= 74-70 F= 69-below • Students must earn a 70% average or above in LA and Math to be promoted to 3rd grade. Their overall average must also be 70% or higher. I will request a conference if your child’s average in any area is a 74 or below.

What does that mean in regards to math? • Students success with problem-solving is greatly affected by reading ability. • Students must be able to prolong focus in order to break down multi-step problem and use strategies. • Students must know math facts to 20 effortlessly. • Students need to understand math vocabulary.

  6. Math Fact Fluency In Second grade, students will be assessed on their fact fluency on a regular basis as required by the TEKS for their grade level. Timed, weekly assessments will be taken and the average of those assessments will account a daily grade. Beginning in the second nine weeks, the grade will account for ½ of major grade for the remaining nine weeks.

  7. Reading Expectations • Students must read daily to build fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. • Students must be able to apply a variety of decoding strategies. • Students must self-monitor and correct when comprehension breaks down by using reading strategies proficiently. • Students need to read for prolonged periods of time and be able to retell the text.

  9. What does that mean for Writing? • Students must be able to speak and write in complete sentences, using correct grammar and mechanics. • Students must be able to brainstorm ideas, organize thoughts, and speak and write about the topic.

  10. Spelling Our weekly spelling consists of a spelling pattern and sight words. We have a total of 16 words and 2 bonus words that follow the pattern. Weekly tests will be averaged for one major writing grade. The dictation sentences use the weekly spelling words, sight words, and past patterns to ensure mastery of spelling. The sentences are designed to help build working memory. They are graded for spelling accuracy, correct capitalization, and ending punctuation. Weekly dictation will be averaged for one daily writing grade.

  11. Homework • Homework is the reinforcement of learning that occurs in the classroom. • Students will receive their homework folders on Friday afternoon and return them on Friday morning. • Homework consists of students reading to an adult for 15-20 minutes each night, practicing spelling and a math worksheet. It is recommended that students study math facts every night. • Students should practice spelling pattern by visiting spellingcity.com or completing the suggested spelling activities in their homework folder.

  12. Attendance: Daily attendance is vital to student learning. It is important for your child to be at school on time. Students enter the classroom at 8:10 in the morning. We will begin working on warm-ups at that time. 10:10 is the “MAGIC” time

  13. Great Expectations • Willow Creek is implementing Great Expectations. This program provides staff and students with the skills needed to create harmony and excitement in the entire school. • Student Expectations: • Self Discipline—controls actions and emotions • Respect—pays attention and shows consideration to others • Cooperation—works well with others • Attitude—positive feelings about someone or something • Accountability--completes classwork in allotted time; returns homework, library books, and home readers regularly • Logical consequences for specific behaviors

  19. Library We will check out books as a class every Monday. There will be a daily open check out for students to visit the library as they need new books. Students are expected to take books home daily and return them daily for independent reading. Each student may check out two books; one on level AR book and one of free choice

  20. Snacks and Lunch • Snack - We do not stop for a snack time, however, it is encouraged for students to bring a nutritious snack to eat while they work. • Water bottles with pop-top style lid • Lunch – Our lunch is from 12:50-1:20 • Please use the parent tables when having lunch with your child.

  21. Transportation changes will require a written note or fax before 3:00 p.m. Phone calls and e-mails will not be accepted. If we do not have parent notification, your child will be sent home the way they normally go home.Please do not put notes in the Wednesday Folder or the Homework Folder.  Transportation

The Wednesday folder is my main way to communicate important information about our class and your child.

  23. Additional Information • Girls should wear shorts under skirts; no spaghetti straps for girls or sleeveless jerseys for boys • Birthday snacks--- store bought cookies or cupcakes can be handed out at the last 10 minutes of the lunch period • No toys/equipment brought from home for recess • Parent Conferences- Will begin soon • Boo Bash— October 27th • Red Ribbon Week—October 29- November 2 • Report Card—October 24th
