  3. Introduction … the fight against poverty remains the cornerstone of our government’s focus. For as long as there are rural dwellers unable to make a decent living from the land on which they live; We are not resting, and we will not falter, in our drive to eradicate poverty. Abridged from President Jacob Zuma’s inaugural speech June 2009

  4. Background • The NDA was established in 2000 by an act of Parliament • It is a schedule 3A statutory organisation • It has representation nationally – • offices in all 9 Provinces • Over 2500 community development projects have been funded to date

  5. Background • Our Vision • A developing society free from poverty • Our Mission • To contribute to poverty eradication and elimination of its causes

Mandate • Primary mandate: To contribute towards the eradication of poverty and its causes by granting funds to civil society organizations for the purposes of: • implementing development projects of • poor communities • strengthening the institutional capacity • of other civil society organizations that • provide services to the poor communities

  7. Mandate Secondary mandate: Promote consultation, dialogue and sharing of development experience between civil society organizations and relevant organs of state; debate development policy; and to Undertake research and publication aimed at providing the basis for development policy.

Current Focus Areas • The NDA funds civil society organisations that focus on the following areas • (NB: not mutually exclusive) • Food security projects • Dairy, piggery, crop and beef farming • Gardening projects • Local economic development / social entrepreneurship • Weaving, bakery, sewing, jewellery, etc. • Early Childhood Development Education Sector • Orphans Vulnerable and Children

  9. Current Focus Areas • NGO consortia and networks for policy and advocacy for the poor • Seminars, conferences, workshops • Capacity building for Civil Society Organisations • Business management skills • Project relevant skills • Conflict resolution

  12. Approach to funding • The NDA only funds civil society organisations that are registered with the Non Profit Organisations Unit of the Department of Social Development • Request for proposals - The NDA • invites proposals from CSOs. It is a • based on preset criteria and focus • areas

Why work with us • We have an understanding of the community development sector • We can provide a database of NGOs and CBOs in identified localities • We are able to provide monitoring and funding for resource projects • We are able to stimulate enterprise creation through capacity building and grant making

Why work with us contd • We offer project management support for externally supported initiatives • Skills development for local NGOs and CBOs for effective service delivery • We are able to provide collateral support to “unbanked” communities • We are able to do capability and competency assessment of NGOs and CBOs to establish institutional readiness for service delivery

Why work with us contd • We are capable of creating knowledge management platforms and sharing of ‘best practice’ in development, including case modelling • We are able to facilitate linkages between government, private sector, civil society and donors to influence development policies • Resource monitoring

  19. Conclusion • Government cannot by itself meet the socio-economic challenges. The private sector, non governmental organisations and ordinary people have to make their contribution.
