America After WWI. Economic Growth Roaring 20’s. Isolationism. US reverts back to Isolationism after WWI. Does not want to be part of World War again. This is main reason US does not join the League of Nations nor signs the Treaty of Versailles. Racism.

  1. America After WWI Economic Growth Roaring 20’s

  2. Isolationism • US reverts back to Isolationism after WWI. Does not want to be part of World War again. • This is main reason US does not join the League of Nations nor signs the Treaty of Versailles

  3. Racism • American very suspicious of all foreigners. • Russian Revolutions makes Americans afraid of all things communists. • Red Scare in America-going after communism in America

  4. Return to Normalcy • American people want to get back to the way things were before WWI. • Republican Warren G. Harding elected president. His foreign policy went back to Isolationism

  5. Economic Boom • There was a slight decline in economy after WWI • Many soldiers returning from war looking for work hurt work force. • But they eventually find work and economy starts to take off.

  6. 1920’s at a glance • Time of enjoying life and having a good time. • Entertainment-movies, music, sports, writing, and art. • Prohibitions-crime, gangs and speakeasies. • New Heroes-Charles Lindbergh

  7. Entertainment • Movies and radio became really popular. Charlie Chaplin/silent Movies • Hollywood became the center of entertainment. • “Movie Stars” were born and become role models. • Sports-people went to watch sporting events. Mainly Baseball-Babe Ruth • Games-Board games and crossword puzzles

  8. Jazz Age • New wave of music started to spread; Jazz. Originated in the African American Community and settled in Harlem • Due to popularity of Jazz music, white America went to Harlem to hear these Artists. Primarily at the Cotton Club. • Popular artist; Duke Ellington, Louise Armstrong, Bessie Smith

  9. Harlem Renaissance • Harlem Renaissance was an artistic movement that gave credit and legitimacy to African American creativity. • Music, writing, poetry became popular with both blacks and whites. • Langston Hughes most famous African American poet at this time.

  10. American Writers • American Writers were questioning American values at this time and many moved to Paris to write about “the lost generation” • Popular writers at this time, Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway

  11. Prohibition • The passing on the 18th Amendment banning alcohol resulted in illegally making and selling “moonshine” • Mobster become very wealthy and popular like Al Capone • Speakeasies were created; clubs that secretly sold alcohol and played jazz.

  12. Other changes in 1920’s • Women became more active. They keep jobs and went to high school and college. • New Hero: Charles Lindberg- first to fly solo over Atlantic Ocean in his plane; Spirit of St. Louis.
