  3. Interpretation • Literal or figures of speech? • Replace the Law or add to it? • Minimum standards; commandments or guidelines? • All cultures and ages or for a specific period? For everyone or a few? “All Scripture is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that all God's people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work”1Timothy 3:16-17

Blessed are… • The poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven • Those who mourn, for they will be comforted • The meek, for they will inherit the earth • Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied • The merciful, for they will be shown mercy • The pure in heart, for they will see God • The peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God • Those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

  6. Blessed • Is not just being “happy” • Approved • Accepted • Honoured

  7. Poor in Spirit • Relationship with God • Spiritual bankruptcy • Reliance on Him not on ourselves • Totally opposite to world’s standards Isaiah 64:6 “All our righteousness is like filthy rags”

  8. Being Real “Pride will ruin people, but those who are humble will be honoured.” Proverbs 29:23 (NCV) “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” James 4: 6 / Proverbs 3: 34

  9. The Challenge • In what areas of my life am I not prepared to let go and admit my need of God • Where and why do I feel the need to maintain control • How can I humble myself before God so he can lift me up?

  10. Matthew 5: 3 “You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule” The Message
