  2. Section D – Problem Solving Solving a Word Problem • Read the problem. Decide what is unknown & what is known. • Choose a variable. • Write an equation. • Solve the equation. • Check your result, give the answer.

  3. 1) When a number is tripled and then added to 35, the result is 101. Find the number.

  4. 2) If you double a number and then subtract 75, you get one-third of the original number. What is that number?

  5. 3) What number must be added to both the numerator and the denominator of the fraction 2/5 to get the fraction 5/11?

  6. 4) Sheila is 5 times as old as her nephew. In four years, she will be 3 times as old as her nephew. How old is Sheila now?

  7. 5) Barbara has one-fourth as many 8-cent stamps as 14-cent stamps. Their value is $4.48. How many 8-cent stamps does she have? value of individual stamp times number of stamps equals total value
