  3. What is ABS? ABS means a Portion of a Service Brake System that Automatically Controls the Degree of Rotational Wheel Slip during Braking.

  4. 1) Sensing the Rate of Angular Rotation of the Wheels 2) Transmitting Signals Regarding the Rate of Wheel Angular Rotation to One or More Controlling Devices which Interpret those Signals and Generate Responsive Controlling Output Signals and 3) Transmitting those Controlling Signals to One or More Modulator Devices Which Adjust Brake Actuating Forces in Response to those Signals

  5. The system’s primary aims are: • Maximize braking power. • Allow the driver to maintain control on the steering by preventing the wheels from locking and skidding. • Shorten braking distance under most conditions.

  6. Features of the ABS system: • ABS Reduces Stopping Distances on Most Road Surfaces, Especially Under Slippery Road Conditions (Low Coefficient of Friction). • ABS Prevents Wheel Lockup thereby Reducing Loss of Control during Braking. • You can steer around the object that you are heading towards even while applying maximum brake force.

  7. ABS vs. NO ABS Some believe that it's possible to slow down quicker in a car without ABS. This has elements of truth, but in practical terms the benefits of ABS massively outweigh the slightly longer braking distances. For road use, ABS is an absolute must as it will allow you to steer out of the way of unexpected hazards.

  8. Braking hard on a slippery surface without ABS Without ABS, as the driver applies the brakes the wheels lock (1). Despite steering, the car continues straight ahead due to the loss of steering control (2) and results in a collision.

  9. Braking hard on a slippery surface with ABS The driver hits the brakes hard on a slippery surface (1), then steers (2), and successfully manages to avoid the obstacle. ABS prevents the wheels from locking, and this allows the car to steer off an obstacle.

  10. ABS Components The ABS system is complicated and consists of three components: Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Modulator Valves Wheel Speed Sensors

  11. Electronic Control Unit (ECU) • The ECU processes all ABS information and signal functions. It receives and interprets voltage pulses generated by the sensor and uses this information to determine: • Impending wheel lock-up and • When/How to activate the ABS modulator valves.
