IMPOSSIBLE TO REPENT

IMPOSSIBLE TO REPENT. Heb. 6:4-6. A Troubling Passage. We read it as if we can’t be forgiven. The real problem is repenting. God wills us to be saved. His every effort has been in this direction. He will condemn, but that’s not His first choice. Else we’d have no Savior.

  1. IMPOSSIBLE TO REPENT Heb. 6:4-6

  2. A Troubling Passage • We read it as if we can’t be forgiven. The real problem is repenting. • God wills us to be saved. • His every effort has been in this direction. • He will condemn, but that’s not His first choice. Else we’d have no Savior.

  3. It’s An “Extreme” Passage • Note what is said of the people involved. • They were “once enlightened”. • 10:32; 2 Peter 2:9-10; 2 Thess. 2:14 • They had “tasted” heavenly gifts. • Heb. 2:9 (experienced); Eph. 2:8 (grace).

  4. They were “made partakers of the Holy Spirit”. • Acts 5:32; Gal. 4:6; Rom. 1:11 • They “Tasted the good word of God”. • James 1:21; I Peter 2:2-3. • They experienced “the powers of the age to come” – miraculous gifts. • They were genuine Christians.

  5. The Apostasy • They “fell away”. • This passage is in “Hebrews”. • We’re looking at Jewish Christians who have been seduced by the “old” way. Jesus is an imposter, Not Messiah. • By denying Him, they put Him to an open shame and crucify Him again.

  6. The Grammar of the Text • “To Renew” – present tense infinitive • Followed by two present tense participles – “crucifying again”, and “Putting to an open shame”. • The action verb is “to renew”, and 2 things happen simultaneous with it. • “It is impossible to renew them to repentance as long as they cling to their views regarding Christ.”

  7. However, should they abandon their heretical views, Christ can again be enthroned. • No person who is concerned about his spiritual condition is beyond the hope of salvation. • We can “go too far.” John 12:39ff. • Eph. 4:19, “being past feeling”. I Tim. 4:2

  8. We Must Be Careful • To remain spiritually “pliable”, responsive to truth. • Heb. 6:1ff – important to go beyond the “first principles” to deeper love and knowledge.
