Classroom etiquette l.jpg
CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE

  • STUDENTS SHOULD BE ATTENTIVE AND COURTEOUS DURING CLASS

    • WATCH YOUR POSTURE. POOR POSTURE TELLS THE PROFESSOR THAT YOU ARE EITHER ILL OR DISENGAGED WHILE IN CLASS.

    • NO TALKING! THE ONLY TALKING YOU SHOULD DO IN CLASS IS TO YOUR PROFESSOR OR DURING SESSIONS WHICH ARE CLASS-RELATED. NO, ASKING YOUR PAL WHAT THE PROFESSOR JUST SAID, IS NOT CLASS-RELATED. GET INFO THAT YOU MISSED AFTER CLASS.

    • TAKE NOTES. THIS IS A GOOD WAY TO MAINTAIN YOUR FOCUS AND GET ACCURATE INFORMATION FROM THE PROFESSOR.

Students should complete the assigned work l.jpg
STUDENTS SHOULD COMPLETE THE ASSIGNED WORK

  • CLASS PARTICIPATION IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTIVE-LEARNING STRATEGIES. YOU WILL FIND IT EASIER TO PARTICIPATE IF YOU COME TO CLASS PREPARED: READ YOUR LESSON, WORK HOMEWORK PROBLEMS, EDIT YOUR NOTES, AND/OR COMPLETE A WRITING ASSIGNMENT.

  • START AN ASSIGNMENT EARLY ENOUGH TO DO A GOOD JOB ON IT.

  • DON’T DEPEND ON SOMEONE ELSE TO HELP DO YOUR WORK FOR YOU. A HUGE PART OF THE LEARNING PROCESS IS “STRUGGLING” THROUGH UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND IT.

  • GO SEE THE PROFESSOR IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND AN ASSIGNMENT.

  • GO TO THE PROFESSOR OR GET A TUTOR TO HELP YOU BETTER UNDERSTAND MATERIAL SO YOU CAN COMPLETE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS.

Abide by the university honor code l.jpg
ABIDE BY THE UNIVERSITY HONOR CODE

  • DO YOUR OWN WORK. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

SOME PROFESSORS MAY CONSIDER TEXTING DURING CLASS CHEATING. TEXTING DURING A TEST OR QUIZ IS CHEATING!

    • DO NOT TAKE THINGE HONOR CODE LIGHTLY. STUDENTS CAN BE SUSPENDED OR EXPELLED BY BREACHING THE HONOR CODE.

Students must turn off all electronic devices before entering the classroom l.jpg
STUDENTS MUST TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES BEFORE ENTERING THE CLASSROOM

  • DO NOT HAVE YOUR CELL PHONE ON AT ALL – NOT EVEN VIBRATE.

  • GET PERMISSION FROM YOUR PROFESSOR IF YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PHONE ON (VIBRATE ONLY) BECAUSE OF A LIGITIMATE REASON.

  • REMOVE THE EARBUDS.

  • DON’T EVEN THINK OF TEXTING.

  • DON’T USE COMPUTER FOR ANYTHING BUT WHAT THE PROFESSOR WANTS YOU TO.

Students should remove their hats and sunglasses while in class dress appropriately period l.jpg
STUDENTS SHOULD REMOVE THEIR HATS AND SUNGLASSES WHILE IN CLASS. DRESS APPROPRIATELY – PERIOD!

  • HATS AND SUNGLASSES HIDE YOUR EYES WHICH ARE THE WINDOWS TO THE SOUL. GOOD COMMUNICATION BEGINS WITH LOOKING AT THE PERSON SPEAKING TO YOU.

  • DON’T WEAR GARMENTS THAT ARE DISTRACTING.

    • WOMEN: COVER UP

    • MEN: PULL THEM UP

No food in the classroom l.jpg
NO FOOD IN THE CLASSROOM

  • SOME PROFESSORS LET STUDENTS HAVE BOTTLED WATER.

  • SOME PROFESSORS ARE EVEN PICKY ABOUT CHEWING GUM.

  • IF YOU HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION THAT MAY REQUIRE YOU TO EAT SOMETHING DURING CLASS, GET THE APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION FROM THE WELLNESS CENTER AND TELL YOUR PROFESSOR.

  • ASK YOUR PROFESSOR ABOUT HIS/HER RULES.

Campus etiquette l.jpg
CAMPUS ETIQUETTE

  • IF YOU ARE LIVING IN THE RESIDENCE HALLS, YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE LIVING IN A “COMMUNITY”.

    • OTHER STUDENTS HAVE ALSO PAID LOTS OF MONEY TO LIVE ON CAMPUS.

    • EVERY STUDENT SHOULD FEEL SAFE AND “AT HOME”.

    • DO NOT USE FOUL LANGUAGE IN PUBLIC PLACES OUTSIDE THE PRIVACY OF YOUR ROOM.

    • KEEP THE NOISE DOWN. THERE IS A CAMPUS CURFEW.

    • SMILE! YOU’RE ON CANDID CAMERA.

    • RA’s ARE UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS.

Limit social life to appropriate times and days l.jpg
LIMIT SOCIAL LIFE TO APPROPRIATE TIMES AND DAYS

  • STUDENTS SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO LEAVE THEIR OWN RESIDENCE IN ORDER TO STUDY. A SOCIAL LIFE IS HEALTHY ONLY IF ENJOYED IN MODERATION.

  • IT’S OK TO HAVE YOUR “SIGNIFICANT OTHER” OVER OCCASSIONALLY BUT NOT CONSTANTLY AND DEFINATELY NO SLEEP-OVERS.

  • ALWAYS ASK YOUR ROOMMATES IF IT’S OK TO HAVE A FEW FRIENDS OVER.

Act like the adults that you are l.jpg
ACT LIKE THE ADULTS THAT YOU ARE

  • ESPECIALLY SINCE THE SHOOTING AT VIRGINIA TECH, CAMPUS SAFETY IS HELD AT A HIGH STANDARD.

  • THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK. IF ANYTHING YOU SAY CAN BE MISINTERPRETED AS A THREAT, YOU MAY BE IN BIG TROUBLE WITH RESIDENCE LIFE OFFICIALS AND CAMPUS POLICE. YOU MAY BE PLAYING BUT, PLEASE REMEMBER, NO ONE HERE KNOWS YOU THAT WELL.

  • TREAT EVERYONE WITH RESPECT: PROFESSORS, CUSTODIANS, YOUR PEERS, THE RA’s, TUTORS, CAFETERIA WORKERS, CAMPUS POLICE, AND YOURSELF.

    • USE RESPECTFUL LANGUAGE.

    • DO NOT BE A BULLY.

    • KEEP THE CAMPUS CLEAN

    • MONITOR YOUR TONE OF VOICE AND YOUR BODY LANGUAGE.

Campus events fals concerts sports events l.jpg
CAMPUS EVENTS: FALS, CONCERTS, SPORTS EVENTS

  • TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES – TEXTING CAN BE SEEN.

  • DO NOT TALK DURING THE PROGRAM

  • APPLAUD ONLY WHEN APPROPRIATE

  • NO FOOD OR DRINKS FOR INDOOR CONCERTS AND MOST FALS EVENTS

  • DRESS APPROPRIATELY

  • DO NOT LEAVE DURING A PERFORMANCE

  • DO NOT YELL OBSENTITIES AT SPORTING EVENTS
