10. Credit Articulation • Some high school classes can earn technical college credit • Example areas: Accounting, Web Page Design, Health, Horticulture, Algebra So… a student who completes ‘Principles of Accounting I’ at AHS may receive credit at a Technical College for ‘Accounting I’. • Students can check with teachers to see if their class qualifies

11. YAP • The Youth Apprenticeship Program provides the opportunity to students to gain work experience during the school day. • Eligibility: • Juniors and Seniors • 3.0 GPA • Completion of at least 2 electives in field of interest • Contact person is Mrs. Beth Rogers

12. End Of Course Tests(EOCTs) • Grades 9 – 12 • Mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry) • Social Studies (United States History, Economics/Business/Free Enterprise) • Science (Biology, Physical Science) • English Language Arts (Ninth Grade Literature and Composition, American Literature and Composition) • EOCT score is averaged in as 15% of the final course grade. The student must have a final course grade of 70 or above to pass the course and earn credit toward graduation.

13. Georgia High SchoolGraduation Tests (GHSGTs) • All students are required to pass the GHSGTs in order to earn a high school diploma. • English/Language Arts • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies • Writing • Students begin taking the tests in their Junior year and have five opportunities to take each of the tests before the end of the twelfth grade.

14. High School DiplomaGraduation Requirements • Majority of AHS students require 28 credits to graduate, with some exceptions (such as students transferring from a non-block school). • Passing grade = 70% • Satisfy attendance requirements • Pass the Georgia High School Graduation Tests

15. Summer School • Credit Recovery only for students who earned a grade of 60%-69% in certain academic courses (not offered for electives) • 2 weeks, approx. 3 hours/day • NovaNet program – computer based • No fee

16. SAT/ACT • Reasoning tests for college admission • Not required for admission to most Junior (2-Year) Colleges in Georgia or Technical Colleges. Check with the college to verify requirements. • Taken in the Junior and Senior years • Students see Dr. McGahey in Guidance Office to register

18. Planning Ahead Encourage your child to think about the following questions: Who am I?Interests, abilities, and the things that are personally important. Where am I going? Career interests and goals How do I get there? Use available resources: Career Center, counselors, teachers, advisors

College Options 4-Year College -Examples: University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, Emory University, Brenau University, Agnes Scott College -Require SAT or ACT scores for admission -Generally require College Prep diploma -Students finish with a Bachelor’s Degree 2-Year College -Examples: Abraham Baldwin, Gainesville State College, Gordon College, Georgia Perimeter College, -Do not generally require SAT or ACT scores for admission -Accept College Prep and Tech Prep students -Students finish with an Associate’s Degree and can transfer to a 4-year college Technical College -Examples: Lanier Tech, Gwinnett Tech, Athens Tech, Dekalb Tech, Georgia Avation Technical College -Do not require SAT or ACT scores for admission -Offer career-focused educational programs -Students finish with a Certificate, Diploma, Associate’s Degree

School Search:Things to Consider You can begin this research at GACollege411.org and follow-up with schools you are interested in. * Admission requirements - ALWAYS verify with college * Size of campus * Campus life and activities * Geographic location * Strength & variety of majors * Financial costs * Faculty/student ratio * Housing availability Seniors are allowed 1 approved absence per semester for college visits.

22. Working Towards College, Scholarships, Etc. In addition to a solid GPA, students interested in attending college should also participate in extra-curricular and/or co-curricular activities. This helps with college and scholarship applications! Examples: On campus - sports, school clubs, academic decathlon, etc. Off campus - part-time jobs, clubs, youth groups, Boy/Girl Scouts, sports, etc. Community service/Volunteer Work Leadership positions within these activities (such as President, Secretary, Coordinator) are a great way for students to gain valuable experience and demonstrate additional, stronger skills to college representatives and scholarship review committees.

23. Student Organizations There is something for everyone! Participation in student organizations is very beneficial for our students. Some examples: Anchor Club, Theatre/Thespian Troupe, Art Club, Academic Decathlon, Beta Club, Chess/Checkers Club, Dance, Deaf Awareness Club, FBLA, Guitar Club, Habit for Humanity, HOSA, International Club, Knit/Needle Club, Math Club, Mock Trial Competition, Model Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Writer’s Block/Literary Magazine, Yearbook A brochure with a brief description is available in the Guidance Office
