  1. Paw Print: A Printing Cost Recovery System at Georgia State University Presented by: Rod Bustos October 21, 1999 GA-COMO

  2. Overview • Background • Why Paw Print? • Basics about the system • Advantages and Disadvantages • Useful URLs • Conclusion GA-COMO

  3. Background • GSU is a large urban university with approximately 24,000 full and part-time students • Pullen Library is the primary campus library; smaller libraries include the Law Library and the Instructional Technology Center GA-COMO

  4. Overview • Background • Why Paw Print? • Basics about the system • Advantages and Disadvantages • Useful URLs • Conclusion GA-COMO

  5. Why Paw Print? • Printing expenses were growing beyond budgeted funds • University labs and libraries were getting eaten alive by wasteful printing • reams & reams of paper • expensive toner cartridges • Needed a way to limit certain stations for GSU patrons GA-COMO

  6. Overview • Background • Why Paw Print? • Basics about the system • Advantages and Disadvantages • Useful URLs • Conclusion GA-COMO

  7. Paw Print Basics • Each student who wants to print in the labs or in the library must have a login ID. • Student campus email account also serves as their Paw Print account. • Paw Print account allots 150 free prints per semester; once this limit is exceeded the cost is 5 cents per page GA-COMO

  8. Paw Print Basics (cont) • What about non-GSU patrons? • Must generate a temporary ID in order to print • Can add value to ID in increments of 20 or 100 prints • ID is valid for 48 hours • ID is restricted for use only on certain workstations GA-COMO

  9. Paw Print Basics (cont) • What about poor quality prints, etc.? • No cash refunds can be given • If a print is illegible or not usable for some other reason, we can credit the user’s account GA-COMO

  10. Types of logins for the system • Students • Pawprint account; typically something like gs12rab • If they don’t need to print we can sign them on with libtemp2.lib • Faculty • Faculty.lib allows free printing GA-COMO

  11. Types of logins (cont) • Non-GSU patrons • libtemp (does not allow printing) • Temp ID (e.g. T0101.tmp) • Secure.lib (is used in the event that someone has done everything correct but still cannot login) GA-COMO

  12. What equipment was required? • PCOUNTER Station • Serves as a printing counter and queue monitor. • Minimum: 80486 with 8MB RAM.Recommended: Low-end Pentium 80 MB hard drive • Network Adapter and Port • Approximate Cost: $400-$1000 GA-COMO

  13. Equipment (cont) • Cash Receptor Unit • Collects cash and sends data to the cash receptor station • Connects to the Cash Receptor Station • Approximate Cost: $1000 GA-COMO

  14. Equipment (cont) • Cash Receptor Station • Reads amount from unit and deposits pages to their account • Minimum: 80486 with 16MB RAM 80 MB hard drive • Network Adapter and Port • Approximate Cost: $400 GA-COMO

  15. Equipment (cont) • Fortres Grand 101 • Software to lock the cash receptor station • Building Site License (covers unlimited workstations in one building) • Approximate Cost: $295.00 GA-COMO

  16. Equipment (cont) • Cash Receptor Station Desk Unit • Furniture that will provide enhanced security for the cash receptor station Physical Plant Cost: $750 • *Optional – Possible to build unit into existing furniture • Minimum Estimated Total Start-up Costs: $1295.00 GA-COMO

  17. Overview • Background • Why Paw Print? • Basics about the system • Advantages and Disadvantages • Useful URLs • Conclusion GA-COMO

  18. Causes patrons to think before they print Saves paper and toner for the library Allows us to keep non-GSU patrons from monopolizing computers Students think it is a hassle to require an account to print Can cause patron and staff frustration Dependent on several servers not under the Library’s control Advantages Disadvantages GA-COMO

  19. Overview • Background • Why Paw Print? • Basics about the system • Advantages and Disadvantages • Useful URLs • Conclusion GA-COMO

  23. Overview • Background • Why Paw Print? • Basics about the system • Advantages and Disadvantages • Useful URLs • Conclusions GA-COMO

  24. Conclusions • Paw Print is an effective, but imperfect system for recovering printing costs. • The system is probably most suitable for larger institutions due to the level of support required from the computer center. GA-COMO
