Where Have We Come From … • Supported the bid to win the 2012 Games for London, with branded events, activities in schools, links on the Council website, public meetings, flying the Olympic Flag, etc. • Worked with partners across the South London boroughs to ensure our area is best represented in every forum and for every consideration on the Games.

  3. Since Winning … • We consulted on and delivered a Cultural Strategy “A Better Future for All” • We established a Cultural Partnership with four theme groups and the remit to oversee Merton’s contribution to & benefits from the 2012 Games • We established separately a Merton Partners – London 2012 group, which is made up of people from all over Merton who are currently or are likely to be actively involved in the 2012 Games delivery locally • The Chamber of Commerce has developed a 2012 Games - Business Forum with two action groups, working to get the best for businesses in Merton

  4. What Next ? • Planning for Merton’s part in the Cultural Olympiad • Developing Volunteering opportunities • Accessing Business opportunities • Engaging with Young People - celebrating the Games • Planning for Merton’s Olympic Event – Tennis at the All England Club • Working with partners across London & particularly South London • Developing & ensuring a long lasting legacy for Merton’s residents and communities

Legacy • What legacy should we be seeking to deliver … - improvements to theatres, libraries & learning venues - new / improved sports & leisure facilities, parks & open spaces - increased volunteering - communities & cultures across the borough working together to improve where & how we live locally - young and old respecting and celebrating both the similarities and differences between each other - ??? ??? ???

We Aim … • To provide two public meetings about the 2012 Games each year • Provide information on the website and through press articles • Develop with, for, and through Merton people a diverse and engaging contribution to the Cultural Olympiad locally • Develop with, for, and through Merton people a legacy which is appropriate, affordable and fitting for the residents and communities of Merton.
