  1. Scientific Visualization Wes Bethel Visualization Group NUG Business Meeting May 29, 2003

  2. Outline • NERSC has visualization capabilities? • Quick Historical Perpective • Recent activities and accomplishments. • Near-term programmatic plans. • What do you need from us?

  3. NERSC has Visualization Capabilities? The user survey contains surprising answers. What’s Available/Provided: • Large, dedicated SMP visualization platform (escher.nersc.gov): SGI Onyx3400, 12 CPUs, 24GB RAM, 4TB FCAL attached RAID, 2xiR4 graphics. • Use of visualization software on NERSC platforms (freeware and expensive commercial applications). • Knowledgeable assistance to help you use the hardware and software.

  4. Recent Accomplishments and Activities • Increased size and species count of visualization tools at NERSC. • Infrastructure improvements. • User Projects.

  5. Near-Term Programmatic Plans • Increase in scope and quality of web-based documentation. Online “man pages” aren’t enough. • Regular schedule of visualization training classes. • Increase of domain-specific visualization software tools. • Improved quality of service through better resource management (stuff you hopefully won’t ever have to know about).

  6. What Do You Need from Us? Please send feedback, either directly or via the User Survey. All Input is welcomed! Specifics: • A specific application installed on some NERSC platform. General Topics: • You want “better documentation,” more training options, easier access to information, etc.

  7. For Further Information • hpcf.nersc.gov/visualization • vis.lbl.gov
