  2. Johnson & Johnson General Info • Founded in 1886 in New Brunswick, New Jersey by Robert, James, and Edward Johnson • Comprises of more than 275 operating companies in over 60 countries. They are a “Family of Companies”. • The world’s sixth-largest consumer health company • The world’s largest and most diverse medical devices and diagnostics company • The world’s fifth-largest biologics company • And the world’s eighth-largest pharmaceutical company

Brief History • 1888 – First commercial first aid kits • 1921 – Band-Aid® adhesive bandages • 1924 – First overseas company opens in U.K. • 1944 – Johnson & Johnson goes public • 1959 – Acquires McNeil Laboratories and greatly increases presence in the pharmaceutical field with TYLENOL® • 1994 - PALMAZ-SCHATZ® stent, the first coronary stent • 2013- Opened innovation centers in: Boston, MA; Menlo Park, CA;    London, UK; and Shanghai, China.

Johnson & Johnson’s Current Condition • Listed #19 on Fortune’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” (based on corporate reputation with criteria such as investment value and social responsibility.) • Sales by U.S. companies were $31.9 billion • Sales by international companies were $39.4 billion • Sales in Europe achieved growth of 9.8% as compared to the prior year, including operational growth of 7.7% and a positive currency impact of 2.1%. • Sales in the Asia-Pacific, Africa region achieved growth of 1.1% as compared to the prior year, including operational growth of 8.6% and a negative currency impact of 7.5%.

Business structure • Three main segments • Consumer Healthcare: baby care, oral care, skin care, wound care, women’s health, and OTC products • Medical Devices & Diagnostics: neurological disease, vision care, diabetes, infection prevention, and cardiovascular disease • Pharmaceuticals: neuroscience, infectious disease, and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Legal Trouble • Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries has faced many different lawsuits over pricing and patent infringement. • Its most recent conflict is over an antipsychotic, Risperdal, due to false promotion and withholding potential risks of drug use. It first went to court in 1994 and is still under review for a few different states.

India • Johnson & Johnson had their license to make cosmetics revoked at a plant outside of Mumbai after having used an unauthorized process for sterilizing its baby powder. • J&J state there were no complaints or reported adverse events. • However, the process had potential risks such as lung damage, nausea, vomiting, and cancer.

  9. China • Johnson & Johnson is appealing to the Chinese government to stop a ruling that would strip them of exclusive rights to the “OneTouch” trademark. • An application for cancellation was wrongly submitted back in December. • China has had several trademark disputes recently.
