  2. Reaching Out to Language, Ethnic Distinct Communities • Identify communities based on your targeted area • Latino • Asian Pacific Islander (API) • African-American • Effective outreach requires time, planning, and building a strong genuine relationship within the community

  3. Create a Plan of Action • Create a plan of action regarding how to go about getting information to the target community. • Create specific goals and objectives for achieving certain outcomes. • Do some research.

  4. Learn About the Community • Identify your target group. • Jointly develop a plan/strategy to conduct effective outreach in collaboration with community members. • Identify and obtain additional resources for outreach work. • Focus on building ongoing relationships within the target community. • Make contacts within the target group.

  5. Implement the Plan • Understand and learn about the culture • Understand the family dynamics • Include the client and family members • Provide appropriate interpreters

  6. Implement the Plan • Work with Community Leaders and/or Cultural Brokers • Work with community-based organizations who work with specific groups • Be flexible when working with these communities

  7. Build Relationships • Building relationships within the target disability community is an approach that fosters great trust and continuity within the community you are trying to serve. • It also provides a greater ability to be effective within the community through increased awareness and knowledge about individuals from that group.
