The Attitude TechniqueYou shape and control your life with the powers that you have been given • Make a commitment • Set a target (date, number, time) • Assemble the ingredients (what you put into your mind and soul, people w/which you surround yourself, proper equipment). • Give unselfishly • Visualization • Believe that it’s going to happen • Expect to Win!

  7. In 1953, a study was conducted of the graduates of Yale University. They were asked if they had a clear, specific set of goals written down with a plan for achieving those goals. Only 3% had written such goals. Twenty years later, researchers went back and interviewed the surviving members of that class. They discovered that the 3% with written specific goals were worth more in financial terms than the entire other 97% combined.

SMART:Specific • A specific goal will usually answer the five "W" questions: • What: What do I want to accomplish? • Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal. • Who: Who is involved? • Where: Identify a location. • Which: Identify requirements and constraints. • It helps if you can picture it clearly

  10. SMART: Measureable • A measurable goal will usually answer questions such as: • How much? • How many? • How will I know when it is accomplished? • It helps if there’s an objective, defined point

  11. SMART:Attainable • An attainable goal will usually answer the question: • Is this goal realistic? Even if it may be a stretch. • It helps if your goal and your commitment level are well matched

  12. SMART: Relevant • A relevant goal can answer yes to these questions: • Does this seem worthwhile? • Is this the right time? • Does this match our other efforts/needs? • Are you the right person?

  13. SMART: Time-bound • A time-bound goal will usually answer the question: • When? • What can I do today? • What can I do 6 weeks/months/years from now? • It helps if the time frame is close enough to energize you

SMART GOALS: PLANNING • AN INVESTMENT • Planning is leveraged time. • 20 minutes of planning will save HOURS later • STRUCTURE • Planning provides the method for informed DECISION making. • Establishes a framework that facilitates making smarter and more PROACTIVE choices about how to use your time. • PLAN your work --- WORK your plan

SMART GOALS: PLANNING • STOP PUTTING OUT FIRES • Planning reduces CRISIS management. • Less likelihood of any critical issues coming up. • A plan makes it easier to deal with the unexpected. • FOCUSING YOUR EFFORTS • Focus enables you to CHANNEL your energy positively into reaching your desired outcome. • Focus leads to accomplishing tasks EFFICIENTLY • DIRECTION • Planning allows you to set PRIORITIES and focus on what is important.

SMART GOALS: PLANNING • CLEANING HOUSE • Eliminate bad HABITS and fear of failure. • Sticking to a plan makes you more likely to break some bad habits you might have • ie. surfing around the net without really accomplishing anything • By establishing a plan and sticking to it you are less likely to FAIL.

  22. “Failure”– A Silver lining??? • Gets you closer to attaining goal next time • Can still serve to remove the fear of moving forward • Can serve to re-frame/re-define your plan • Provides learning/experience • Better to attain 90% of a goal, then to never try • Your peers will still be impressed

Time Management: AUDIT • Planning your time is just as important is planning anything else • TIME AUDIT: For 1 week record everything that you do for each 24 hour period • Work • Class • Sleep • Exercise • Social • Wasted Time You only live once – is it really worth wasting time when there is so much else you could be doing?
