  27. Good Neighbour Policy • Our local community is shared by many different groups of people (e.g., Beverley Morgan Park) • Pick-up after yourself, be courteous to others around you, and share the spaces appropriately.

  28. Attendance 1. Go to class! • Statistical studies of students in Durham high schools have proven that, for every class you miss, your final mark potential drops by an average of 1%! 2. Go to class on time! • It is a disruption to the class if you come in late. Progressive discipline measures will apply for repeated lateness.

  29. Signing in and out • If you arrive late at school for any reason, you must sign-in at the main office. • If you need to leave school early for any reason, you must sign-out at the main office. • For appointments, sign-out when you leave and sign-in when you return.

  30. Being Successful • Talk with your teacher(s). • Inquire in the Guidance Office. • Get a (peer) tutor. • Ensure appropriate resources are available to you: • Academic Resource • English Language Learners • etc.

  32. Valuables • The school does NOT recommend bringing valuables to school. • The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. • If you have valuables at school, NEVER leave them unattended – even for a minute! • If your personal electronic devices are stolen, it is your responsibility to report to the police and provide serial numbers – sometimes they are retrieved

  33. Smoking At any time or day: • Anyone smoking anywhere on school property is subject to a $305 fine or court summons (no matter who “witnesses” it!) • Giving, sharing, or selling a cigarette to someone under 19 is subject to a $305 fine or court summons.

  34. Food and Drink • Clean up the cafeterias as you leave - even if the mess isn’t yours. • No food or drink in classrooms or hallways. • At lunch, students are to be on the first floor only (unless with a teacher in Guidance, Library, etc.)

  35. Lockers • Lockers are assigned to students, but remain property of the school. • Secure the locker assigned to you as you are responsible for what’s in it. • Do not share your combination with anyone other than your teacher. • All lockers MUST be registered with the office.

  38. Parents’ and Guardians’ Workshop

  39. We are a school community that works together Great achievements are not born from a single vision but from the combination of many distinctive view points. Diversity challenges assumptions, opens minds, and unlocks potential to solve any problems we may face.

  40. At Pine Ridge, we… • Encourage students to get involved • Develop leadership skills • Embrace diversity and learn from each other • Equip students the tools to thrive in the 21st century • Provide the best teaching possible to allow opportunity for student success for all

  41. We graduate students to…. • Be solid global citizens • Post high school ambitions and skills for the workplace, college and university • Develop a solid work ethic • Be good communicators with others

  42. How do we get there?

  43. How do we get there? • Engaging lessons • Variety of assessments • Extra help available • Including parents and guardians as partners in working with the students

  44. Parents’ and Guardians’ Role • “Parents and guardians play an important role in the education of their children and have a responsibility to support the efforts of school staff in maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students. (excerpt from the Ontario Schools Code of Conduct, printed in full in the Agenda given to each student and posted on our website)

  45. Role (continued) “Parents fulfill this responsibility when they: • show an active interest in their child’s school work and progress; • communicate regularly with the school; • help their child be neat, appropriately dressed and prepared for school; • ensure that their child attends school regularly and on time;

  46. Role (continued) • promptly report to the school their child’s absence or late arrival; • become familiar with the Code of Conduct and school rules; • encourage and assist their child in following the rules of behaviour; • assist school staff in dealing with discipline issues; and • demonstrate respect for all students, staff, and parents.”

  47. School Community Council (SCC) • We encourage parents to get involved! • Role of the SCC: provide input in areas that affect school life at Pine Ridge • Informative presentations provide information and support for your child’s high school success • SCC meets: last Monday of most months at 7:00 pm beginning with Monday September 29th

  48. Attendance • Call the office if your son or daughter is missing class due to an illness or an appointment. • Send a note with your son or daughter if he or she must leave class early for an appointment. (We can not interrupt classes in progress by paging in to get a student out of class.)

  49. Expectations • The agenda clearly lays out the dress code, attendance procedures, and behaviour expectations. • Review these expectations carefully with your son or daughter so that he or she understands them and can ensure a safe learning environment for all.

  50. Homework • “10 minutes per grade per night” • Not necessarily every night • Varies by subject and course level • Clarifying expectations well before the due date • Providing support without doing the work for them
