  35. ”PREPARE YOURSELF”ACTIONS YOU MUST TAKE TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES FOR SELECTION • Excel in duty performance -- demonstrated by strong NCO-ERs • Seek out and perform successfully in demanding and non-traditional positions, or in positions of higher grade • Avoid repetitive TDA assignments -- round out your career with a diversity of assignments, from TDA to TOE to staff (including DOD, Joint and Army Staff) and troop leading • Attend and complete NCOES Courses with honors • Pursue military education for self-development • Pursue civilian education for self-improvement • Be physically fit for age and duty assignment -- pass and exceed APFT standards (earning physical fitness badge stands out to board members)

  36. ”PREPARE YOURSELF”ACTIONS YOU MUST TAKE TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES FOR SELECTION (Con’t) • Comply with weight control policies of AR 40-501 and AR 600-9 • Be selected as NCO of the Quarter/Year • Keep a clean record -- no recent record of misconduct or disciplinary action, e.g. Article 15, DUI, etc. • Maintain a complete and accurate OMPF, including a current DA Photograph

  37. HOW NOT TO BE COMPETITIVE FOR SELECTION • Record of misconduct and disciplinary problems • Received “NO(s)” for values and ethics supported by bullet comments (Part IVa NCOER) • Trend of poor performance as reflected in NCO-ERs • Not physically fit, failed APFT(s) • Not in compliance with Army policies on weight control • Repetitive assignments to easy jobs or nominative/TDA assignments without exposure to troop leading, branch qualifying jobs • Extended breaks from traditional MOS/leadership positions

  38. HOW NOT TO BE COMPETITIVE FOR SELECTION (Con’t) • Failed NCOES Courses • Absence of DA Photograph in OMPF or outdated DA Photograph • Poorly represented in NCO-ER • Non-pursuit of self-improvement, i.e. college education or military courses • Not keeping your records (OMPF) current and accurate

  39. SUMMARY “PREPARE YOURSELF” THE ACTIONS YOU MUST TAKE ARE SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE DONE TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES FOR SELECTION
