  2. Teaching, Research and Service • Do not underestimate the value of service to enhance research. • Involvement in working groups keeps you and “them” informed. • “The community” will be reviewing your work.

  3. Clerical/Syntax/Administration • Spelling, font size, organization • Reviewers like nice figures • Reference other people • Recommend reviewers • Follow the rules • Know the funding program • Know the funding program director • Know the budget and review cycle • Ask colleagues/mentors for review

  4. Content • An idea • Motivation • National need • An illustration • Industrial collaboration • Initial results, proof of concept • Something to produce excitement

  5. (courtesy of Michael Loui - UIUC) • Clearly define the problem • Justify the significance of the work • Explain what is innovative • Include a comprehensive literature review • Explain your research plan and methodology • Give enough detail but not too much • Pretend you are the reviewer

(courtesy of Mark Kushner - UIUC) • Best ideas do not always get funded • Proposals that excite the reviewers and program director usually get funded • Obtaining funds is marketing - packaging is a key component • Propose finite, doable, and realistic tasks • Know what the experts in the field have done and reference them - they are the reviewers!
