Life on the Slave Ships

  • The conditions on the ships were horrible

  • People were very crammed right next to each other for 5-12 weeks

  • There was such a big range because the weather had an affect on the journey


Rebellions
Rebellions

  • It was hard to plan a rebellion because all of the slaves were from different tribes and spoke different languages.

  • If the slaves were successful they still didn’t know where they were, where they were going to go, or how to steer a ship.


Daily activities
Daily Activities

  • They ate oatmeal with corn and rice mixed together into mush.

  • The sick slaves didn’t get any food because they didn’t want to waste it.

  • The crew made them dance so they would stay in shape.


Domestic work
Domestic Work

  • Domestic work is when slaves work in wealthy homes.

  • Slaves would fan owner, clean, cook, and entertained owner’s children.


Field work
Field Work

  • Slaves would work in fields picking cotton and tobacco.

  • Slaves would work from sun rise to sun set.

  • Slaves would often try to fake an illness or an injury to get out of the field work.


Runaways
Runaways

  • Slaves were very rarely successful when they tried to escape.

  • If the slave owners found out that a slave was trying to run away, they would send dogs out to try and catch them.

  • If the slaves were caught they would be whipped, and have a finger or a toe cut off.


Families
Families

  • Slave families would kill their children if they didn’t want them to go into slavery.

  • Mother or father would take place and move to another plantation.


Auctions
Auctions

  • Slaves would get branded before being auctioned.

  • Slaves were taken away from their families.

  • Slave owners would inspect the slaves before they purchased them.
