art OF BRAZIL. ISMAEL NERY. (1900-1934), born in Belém , Pará . Studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro and also in Paris. A poet and painter with a cubist style similar to Pablo Picasso. Contracted tuberculosis in 1931, and died of it in 1934.

VICTOR BRECHERET • (1894 –1955) An Italian-Brazilian sculptor. • He lived most of his life in São Paulo, except for his studies in Paris. • Many of his subjects from the Bible, classical mythology, and Brazilian folk art. • His best-known work, the massive Monument àsBandeiras was completed in 1953.

  6. TARSILA DO AMARAL • (1886-1973), born in Capivari, São Paulo. • She is known simply as Tarsila and is considered to be one of the leading Latin American modernist artists. • Her work includes themes such as social class, poverty, women, and children.

VIK MUNIZ • Born in 1961 into a working class family in São Paulo, Brazil. • He is a visual artist, currently living in New York City. • He began his career as a sculptor but gradually became more interested in photographic reproductions of his work. • Uses dirt, diamonds, sugar, string, chocolate syrup and garbage to create bold images.
