Active leisure recreation
ACTIVE LEISURE & RECREATION

Mass participation
MASS PARTICIPATION

  • LOTS OF PEOPLE TAKING PART IN AN ACTIVITY

  • 2 REASONS FOR A NATION TO PROMOTE MASS PARTICIPATION:

    • HEALTH – ACTIVE PEOPLE ARE HEALTHIER, THEREFORE LESS MONEY SPENT ON HOSPITAL TREATMENT

    • SPORTING SUCCESS – MORE PEOPLE TO CHOOSE FROM, HIGHER STANDARD OR COMPETITION, THEREFORE BETTER STANDARD AT THE TOP LEVEL

Sport for all
“SPORT FOR ALL”

  • 1 INITIATIVE IN THE UK TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION

  • AIMING TO HELP PEOPLE OVERCOME BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION

Requirements for physical activity
REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

  • FITNESS

  • MANY ASSUME THEY DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT FITNESS TO TAKE PART

  • FITNESS CAN BE GAINED & MAINTAINED

  • SOME ACTIVITIES WOULD NEED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF FITNESS, EG. CLIMBING

REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

  • ABILITY

  • LINKED TO CONFIDENCE

  • A PERSON NEEDS TO HAVE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE

  • SOME ACTIVITIES REQUIRE VERY LITTLE EXPERIENCE, EG. POWER WALKING

REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

  • RESOURCES

  • 3 MAIN PARTS: PHYSICAL EQUIPMENT, PEOPLE & MONEY

  • YOU CAN’T GO MOUNTAIN CLIMBING IF THERE IS NO MOUNTAIN!

  • SOME ACTIVITIES REQUIRE VERY LITTLE EQUIPMENT

  • A COUNTRY MUST HAVE THE ECONOMIC WILL AND CULTURAL DESIRE, EG. KENYA

REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

  • TIME

  • LACK OF TIME IS KNOWN AS “THE WESTERN DISEASE”

  • INCREASED LEISURE TIME, BUT INCREASED SOCIAL DEMANDS

  • MORE CHOICE HAS LED TO LESS ACTIVITY

ACTIVITY 4

  • FOR EACH OF THE 4 REQUIREMENTS:

  • GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A SOCIETAL GROUP WHO MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE BECAUSE……..

  • GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A SOCIETAL GROUP WHO CAN PARTICIPATE BECAUSE….

  • FOR EXAMPLE

  • A WORKING CLASS MAN MAY NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY GOLF AS IT IS TOO EXPENSIVE

  • A WORKING CLASS MAN WOULD BE ABLE TO RUN AS IT REQUIRES INEXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT
