  3. ACTIVITY 1 • WHAT IS A HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIFESTYLE? • WHAT DO YOU THINK IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE? • DISCUSS WITH THE PERSON NEXT TO YOU

  4. HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIFESTYLE • PHYSICALLY ACTIVE (30 MIN MODERATE ACTIVITY ON MOST DAYS OF THE WEEK) • BALANCED DIET • FREE FROM ILLNESS • MENTAL HEALTH

  5. DEFINITIONS • LEISURE: PERIOD OF TIME SPENT OUR OF WORK AND ESSENTIAL DOMESTIC ACTIVITY • RECREATION: USE OF TIME IN A MANNER DESIGNED FOR THERAPEUTIC REFRESHMENT OF ONE’S BODY OR MIND • PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: ANY MOVEMENT THAT EXPENDS ENERGY

  6. ACTIVE LEISURE & RECREATION • LEISURE TIME HAS INCREASED IN RECENT HISTORY, DUE TO MANY FACTORS • THERE IS A LARGER AMOUNT OF CHOICE OF HOW TO SPEND LEISURE TIME • THIS MAY CONTRIBUTE TO THE DECREASE IN ACTIVE LEISURE ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN • CHANGES IN WORK HAVE ALSO LED TO THE DECREASE

  7. ACTIVITY 2 • HOW COULD THE GOVERNMENT INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN ACTIVE LEISURE?

MASS PARTICIPATION • LOTS OF PEOPLE TAKING PART IN AN ACTIVITY • 2 REASONS FOR A NATION TO PROMOTE MASS PARTICIPATION: • HEALTH – ACTIVE PEOPLE ARE HEALTHIER, THEREFORE LESS MONEY SPENT ON HOSPITAL TREATMENT • SPORTING SUCCESS – MORE PEOPLE TO CHOOSE FROM, HIGHER STANDARD OR COMPETITION, THEREFORE BETTER STANDARD AT THE TOP LEVEL

  9. “SPORT FOR ALL” • 1 INITIATIVE IN THE UK TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION • AIMING TO HELP PEOPLE OVERCOME BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION • EG. 50+ BADMINTON SESSIONS • CRECHE FACILITIES FOR MOTHERS TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE • PLACES PEOPLE PLAY (SPORT ENGLAND)

  10. ACTIVITY 3 • WHAT REASONS COULD ACCOUNT FOR A LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY? • LACK OF TIME • LACK OF MONEY • NO TRANSPORT • NO FACILITIES • NOT FIT ENOUGH • NOT SKILLED ENOUGH

  11. REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY • FITNESS • MANY ASSUME THEY DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT FITNESS TO TAKE PART • FITNESS CAN BE GAINED & MAINTAINED • SOME ACTIVITIES WOULD NEED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF FITNESS, EG. CLIMBING

  12. REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY • ABILITY • LINKED TO CONFIDENCE • A PERSON NEEDS TO HAVE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE • SOME ACTIVITIES REQUIRE VERY LITTLE EXPERIENCE, EG. POWER WALKING

  13. REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY • RESOURCES • 3 MAIN PARTS: PHYSICAL EQUIPMENT, PEOPLE & MONEY • YOU CAN’T GO MOUNTAIN CLIMBING IF THERE IS NO MOUNTAIN! • SOME ACTIVITIES REQUIRE VERY LITTLE EQUIPMENT • A COUNTRY MUST HAVE THE ECONOMIC WILL AND CULTURAL DESIRE, EG. KENYA

  14. REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY • TIME • LACK OF TIME IS KNOWN AS “THE WESTERN DISEASE” • INCREASED LEISURE TIME, BUT INCREASED SOCIAL DEMANDS • MORE CHOICE HAS LED TO LESS ACTIVITY
