1. Working with the Netbooks on Wheels (NOW) WPMS Introduction and Orientation For Students

2. What Will You Be Able to Use? • Four carts of 32 (up to 36) netbooks: A. Authors B. Books C. Characters D. Discoverers • 5 Digital cameras (with 30 memory cards) and 1 camcorder • One available wireless printer • One wireless access point

3. What is a Netbook? Designed to be a cheaper and more accessible laptop for use anywhere Less processing power but can still do 95% of what you use a computer for Retails starting at $299 More fragile and especially fragile with the screen/monitor

4. Orientation/Handling of the Computers • Sit with backs to the screen. • Make sure nothing sits under the netbook on your desk. • Do not move the desk with a netbook on it. The Netbook is very small and fairly fragile: • Do not move the desk with a netbook on it. • Never grab the netbook by the top screen, it is the most fragile and expensive part. • It can be easy to tip over.

5. Checking Out the Netbooks • Need two student tech leaders to be responsible for checkout and checkin, especially when a teacher is not present. • Do not plug-in or plug-out the netbooks. • All the slots are named after authors, books, characters, or discoveries. • Come up in a single file line, by your netbook numbers or wait for the tech leaders to call you. • Carry the netbook with two hands to your desk.

6. With the Computers • Listening vs. looking at the computer. • If you have an issue, you will do it on paper and lose computer privileges. • Appropriate Net Usage, be school appropriate (stay positive and respect others’ work) • Moodle keeps a record of everything you wrote or do. • We can email your parents what you wrote with the click of a button. • Do Not Chat • Netbook security: if these computers leave the site, they will automatically turn off in 30 days or less • Make sure there is at least ten minutes at the end of period to save work, check in laptops, and return desks.

7. Checking-In the Netbooks • Make sure you saved your work. • Make sure you submit in the Moodle. • Two tech helpers will collect and put your netbook into the right slot. • Wait for your number or computer name to be called. • Check-in 17-32 • Check-in 1-16

8. We are Special and Responsible • Be positive, bring a good • attitude even when technology • doesn’t work perfectly, and • support your fellow classmates. • We got the most money for technology of any middle school in San Diego county. • We got the second most money of any middle schools in Southern California. • These are difficult times for many people, 22% under and unemployment. • Schools will be cutting.

9. Online Safety and Rules Consequences: • Using the netbooks is a privilege that you can lose quickly. • First time, lose for the day • More than once you will not use until parent is contacted and signs agreement • Third time, done for good. The Don’t List: • Don’t alter the netbook to any personal settings. • Don’t cyberbully • Don’t use inappropriate language, pictures, videos, music or • Don’t surfing randomly if it’s not related to classwork Computers automatically disable in less than 30 days if they are taken off-campus. Moodle keeps a record of all online activity which can be sent to parents at the click of a button.

10. Teachers: Don’t forget to plug in the netbooks at the end of the day!
