What Happened After The World War • Thousands of people were jobless and living in poverty • Severe shortage of food, water, electricity and housing • People lived in slum conditions • Diseases were common due to overcrowded living conditions, poor sanitation and lack of health services • People had to stay in houses that were crammed to the physical limit • Most of the houses had only one water tap for the whole house and everybody in the house had to share one bucket-type latrine • Many workers went on strikes to demand for higher pay and better working conditions. • Prices of food items increased by a lot Eldora

  4. Shortage Of Jobs • most work as hawkers, selling food in the stalls • some work as sellers, selling whatever things they have with them • suffered a lot and poor public services • shortage of doctors as many doctors had been killed during the war • people doing odd jobs Yong Sen

Shortage Of Resources • a shortage of water and electricity • machinery used to filter and pump water was damaged during wartime • water pipes in buildings burst • there was not enough water for the people • had to be careful about how they handle water • machinery for generating electricity was also damaged during wartime • the streets were unsafe at night as they were not lit Eldora

What the British Government did • food was rationed • each family was allowed to buy only a small amount of food so that every family would have food • children were given free food at some food distribution centres • the British made agreements with other countries to supply rice and other foodstuffs to Singapore in exchange for rubber Yong Sen

What the British Government did • the government loaned money to businessmen to help them start businesses • it promised to buy what these businesses imported, like food and clothing • the government also started trading with neighbouring countries again • when trade took place, there were more jobs for people Eldora

  9. Labour Exchange Problem: There were not enough jobs for the people in Singapore. Solution: The British government set up the Labour Exchange. Labour Exchange helped the people of Singapore to get employed. In the first few months after the British returned to Singapore, more than 60, 000 people found jobs. Also, more than 15, 000 people found jobs in the military forces. Eldora
