  1. TOPIC: Methods of Separating MixturesEssential Question: What are the different ways of separating mixture? Chemistry

  2. What are the ways of separating Mixture?a.) Filtrationb.) Centrifugec.) Decantingd.) Chromatographye.) Distillationf.) Density

  3. Filtration can be used to separate an insoluble substance from a soluble substance Ex. Coffee grounds are separated by water through filtration

  4. Centrifuge • A centrifuge is a tool used to separate matter of different densities. • The centrifuge spins rapidly. • Ex. Separation of solid matter in blood from the liquid portion.

  5. Decant • To decant – pour the liquids off and leave the solids behind

  6. Chromatography • Used to separate components of a solution • Ex. Paper chromatography separate black ink into the colored dyes it contains

  7. Distillation • A method of separating substances that have different boiling points • Ex. Separating alcohol from water • Boiling pt of alcohol is 70 Celcius • Boiling pt of water is 100 Celcius

  8. Density • Ratio of mass and volume

  9. Update Notebook • Paste or tape that notes on page 35 • On page 34 You are going to draw all of those techniques in separating the mixtures

  10. Evaporation can be used to separate a solute from the solvent in a solution

  11. A magnet • Can be used to separate a magnetic substance from a non-magnetic substance
