  • Hum: v. to produce a tune without opening the lips or forming words. 哼; hum a tune: 哼小调

  • Pout: v. to push the lips forward, esp. to show displeasure 噘嘴

  • Stroke: n. a sudden loss of brain function caused by a blockage or rupture of a blood vessel to the brain 中风

  • Aphasic: a. of loss of the ability to speak; 失语症的

  • Tears ran from both of their eyes: both of them cried.

  • She drew her arms around the useless shoulders of her father: 她伸出两臂拥抱住爸爸那毫无用处的双肩。 drew her arms: stretched, reached out her arms.

  • She felt grief for the loss she was to endure, the words of love that had comforted her:她对将要长期忍受的损失感到悲痛,她失去了曾经使她宽慰的爱的话语。1. She was to endure是定语从句,修饰the loss. 2. was to do sth 是过去将来时态的用法。3. 划线部分是the loss的同位语,说明失去的是什么。

  • Steadily unconcerned about the damage: didn’t care the damage at all. 毫不在乎伤害

    Remarks: Do you really think the little girl had heard her father’s heart song? Anyway, we have to admit that the ability to express one’s love to the family is important. Do you remember that Ni Ping, CCTV host, suggested every audience hug his/her family during Chinese New Year TV party?

Passage 2 Oldest Running Reptile

  • Remains: n. Ancient ruins or fossils.古代的残迹或化石, 遗骨。 Fossil ~: 遗骨化石

  • Eudibamus cursoris / Eudibamas : the oldest known member of a major group of early reptiles. It was very small, less than 28 cm long, and weighed less than ½ kg; it only ate plants. It was the oldest running reptile.

  • Reptile: n. cold blooded egg-laying animal that creeps or crawls 爬行动物; creep: 用肢体爬行。Crawl:蠕动爬行

  • It does not appear to be directly linked to more modern reptiles: 它似乎与更现代的爬行动物并无直接联系。 Appear to: seem to似乎

  • Lizard: n. 蜥蜴

  • One-half kilogram: 半公斤。Kilogram: kilo or kg
