  2. joint-stock colony: Write - king gave grant of land to a corporation - sold stock to investors - assumed all costs to settle colony Virginia (VA) - profits from Great Britain’s first colony in North America - selling goods - sale of land - went back to company & stockholders

  3. propriety colony: Write - king issued charter granting land ownership to person or group - owner had full rights to - govern & - distribute land - established: - safe for Quakers to worship Pennsylvania

  4. royal colony: Write - operated directly by Great Britain’s (GR BRIT) government - through a royal governor appointed by the king - all profits went to GR BRIT’s government - no colony’s started this way - by end of colonial period most colonies were royal

  6. Write (20 years) - 1732 – 2 decades GA – trustee colony - 21 men inc. James Oglethorpe (JO) interested in charity named as trustees - trustee –a person placed in an official position of trust to act on behalf of someone else

  7. - official motto: Write “Not for ourselves but for others” - GA - great social experiment - rules strict - carefully selected colonists - no convicts - no debtors - must have skills

  8. - money donated to buy Write - tools to build & farm - weapons - food to support until 1st harvest - seeds to plant - 35 families – 114 settlers - farmers, tailors, bakers, merchants, etc. all skilled in trade

  9. - late November (NOV) 1732 set sail w/ JO Write - ship - Anne - 57 days arrived in harbor Charles Town, SC - SC would help new GA colony get started - JO & Carolina Rangers set sail for Port Royal, SC while GA settlers rested

  10. - 18 miles up Savannah River Write - JO found large flat area good for settlement known as Yamacraw Bluff - upstream – small village of Yamacraws (Creek Indians) - JO met Carolina trader John Musgrove and wife Mary - Mary’s father – white trader & mother – Creek Indian

  13. Write - February 12, 1733 – colonists arrived at Yamacraw Bluff - many agree this is the founding (creation) of the GA colony - Georgia Day Celebration - February 12

  14. Write - by April - 1 in 4 colonists died - dysentery from polluted water - only doctor died - new well dug - soon more colonists arrived - 40 misplaced Jews from Spain & Portugal including a doctor

  15. - other immigrants began to arrive Write - paid their own way - Italian silk merchants - Lutheran Salzburgers - Germans - Swiss - English - Scottish Highlanders - other nationalities
