  1. Revisiting the 3R’s: RICH Mathematics REALISTIC Contexts Proven RESULTS Welcome Parents

  2. What is Mathematics in Context (MiC)? • MiC is a middle grades mathematics curriculum and supplemental resource • Developed at the University of Wisconsin in conjunction with the Freudenthal Institute • Funded in part by the National Science Foundation

  3. Real-world examples develop math concepts Rich Mathematics builds on students’ existing knowledge Mathematical models anchor understanding (ratio tables, double number lines, etc). Integrated math topics and other subjects Research based The Mathematics in Context (MiC) Difference

  4. Every Student, Every Day • MiC Principles for Students: • Have success in math everyday! • Discover that math is meaningful in my life! • Talk about or reflect on what I learned in math class today.

  5. Realistic Contexts • Mathematics arises from the context • Motivates students with different learning styles • Supports retention of content

  6. Mathematical Models anchor deeper understanding Discover, explore, investigate concepts Mathematics builds from students’ prior knowledge Multiple Strategies encouraged Rich Mathematics

  7. Available on our website http://info.eb.com/products/mathematics-in-context/ Research and Results!

  8. Informal Students use contexts and drawings Pre-formal Students use models Formal Students apply algorithms and formulas Pre-formal Informal Formal Learning Progressions MiC’s Curriculum Design

  9. Helps teachers informally assess students’ understanding during the lesson Built-in to daily plans The pyramid level describes the cognitive level of the problem from basic to more challenging Ongoing assessment of student learning

  10. www.mathincontext.eb.com

  11. New MiC Interactive • Interactive math models from number lines to ratio tables, graphs, and more • Teachers will use on digital display for whole class activities and instruction

  12. Helping your child at home • Ask questions: Do you understand what the problem is asking? How did you do this in class? Do you have all of the information that you need? • Review the pages before the problem for clues to the solution or process • Look at the Summary Section provided as a review of the section at the end of each section • Answers to Check Your Work provided in the back of the student editions. • Look at class notes for samples done in class

  13. Why We are Using MiC: • Realistic contexts motivate reluctant learners • Students access real mathematics through multiple entry points • Formative Assessment items are clearly marked within the teacher guide • Online resources are provided for students and teachers • Teachers’ math content knowledge increases while using MiC materials • Professional Development designed to meet your school’s needs Encyclopædia Britannica quality

  14. Mathematics in Context provides the necessary tools and resources to help your child achieve their full potential!
