  6. The following graph shows the increase in the average age of GPs from 2001 to 2005 as reported in the March 2006 Department of Health publication titled 'South Australian Medical Labour Force 2005'.

  7. Demand for health care services is increasing at a time when there is an international shortage of medical and nursing staff. It is increasingly difficult to recruit GPs to work in country areas. While South Australia has succeeded in recruiting health professionals in recent years, we know recruitment will become more difficult in particular specialties, such as obstetrics and intensive care.

  8. Medical Research Institute The establishment of a South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute will ensure South Australia's strong position in health and medical research in the future

  9. New Royal Adelaide Hospital The new hospital will incorporate the services of the current Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), and will assume some of the more complex services from The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH). It will transform and improve the face of Adelaide’s West End.It will have more than 80 000 same day and overnight admissions per year, 800 beds (including 100 same-day), an ambulatory care centre, operating theatre suite, all clinical and non-clinical support services necessary for the provision of high quality and safe patient care, and an excellent facility for teaching and research.
