Validation Archive • We are in the process of building a Validation Archive(VALAR) for S-NPP CrIS/ATMS products • The archive should serve as a go-to archive for the life of the S-NPP CrIMSS mission and directly support development • The base archive is shaping up to consist of the following S-NPP matchup datasets… Nalli et al. - CrIS/ATMS Val Telecon

VALAR Datasets (1/2) • High-quality RAOB “anchor points” (dedicated and reference sondes) analogous to NPROVS • Original native files “untouched” at full resolution • Reduced 100 effective layer RTA (i.e., correlative truth) • Merged ECMWF internal “Level 2” formatted files • CrIS/ATMS SDR Granule “Stamps” • A VALAR “stamp” is roughly defined as a granule-level input file (matched with a RAOB anchor point) needed for performing re-retrievals • SDR stamps consist of4-scan line granules within ±1 minute of overpass, ≈500 km radius • CrIS SDRs, geolocation (HDF5) • ATMS SDRs/TDRs, geolocation (HDF5) • CrIMSS IDPS operational EDRs and CCRs (HDF5) Nalli et al. - CrIS/ATMS Val Telecon

VALAR Datasets (2/2) • Additional Stamps • GFS (aka, “AVN”) pre-processed stamps for NUCAPS re-retrievals • AIRS stamps (Maddy) matched up with the S-NPP dedicated RAOBs for Satellite EDR Intercomparisons • Dedicated RAOBs launched for S-NPP are well suited for AIRS overpasses • Current space limitations preclude obtaining “everything” Nalli et al. - CrIS/ATMS Val Telecon

  8. S-NPP GRUAN Reference RAOB Update • We have begun collecting SDR stamps for GRUAN reference RAOB collocations obtained via the NPROVS+ system (going back to July 2013) • These will complement the dedicated RAOBs • The combined sample will provide excellent representation of global zones (trop, midlat, polar) and conditions (land/island/coast/sea) Nalli et al. - CrIS/ATMS Val Telecon

  9. NOAA AEROSE Campaign Year-2 • The Year-2 NOAA AEROSE validation campaign is set to commence onboard the NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown • 11 Nov to 8 Dec 2013 • Delayed about 2 weeks due to government shutdown • Bridgetown to Recife • Instrumentation includes: • 116 RS92 radiosondes • 20 EN-SCI ECC ozonesondes • M-AERI • Microtops sunphotometers • Vaisala ceilometer • Will provide another independent truth dataset (i.e., not assimilated and decoupled from land-based GTS sites) Nalli et al. - CrIS/ATMS Val Telecon
