  5. Rise of Republican Party • Emerged as result from Kansas-Nebraska Act • Whigs collapsed • Gained popularity after the caning of Charles Sumner • Incorporating the following parties: • Northern Whigs • Free Soilers • Know-Nothings • Antislavery Democrats

  6. Republican Platform 1860 • Supported Wilmot Proviso • Believed Dred Scott invalid • No more expansion of slavery • Build transcontinental railroad • Free homesteads in West

  7. Nat Turner’s Rebellion (1831) • Definition: Slave revolt led by Nat Turner attacking white farm families in Virginia • 60 whites killed, mainly women and children • Turner captured and killed • Significance: Sent Southern writes into a panic—> strong defense of slavery

  8. John Brown at Harper’s Ferry 1859 • Definition: Led an armed assault against a federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, VA • Brown was caught and hanged • Significance: • Remember “Bleeding Kansas”? • Pottawatomie Creek Massacre, 1856 • Mini Civil-War • Showed how violent the conflict was becoming

  9. Order of Secession • Abraham Lincoln (Republican) elected president Nov. 6, 1860 • South Carolina secedes Dec. 20, 1860 • Confederate States of America (CSA) formed Feb. 4, 1861 • Virginia secedes from the Union April 17, 1861
