  3. Now look at the mock exam sheet in front of you. This is what you will get in your controlled conditions assessment.

  4. Remember what to do with an exam question? The question Remind yourself of Act 1 Scene 1 in the text and in one performed version of the play... • Using this scene as a starting point, and referring to Shakespeare’s play as a whole, explore how the character of either Tybalt orBenvolio is portrayed in the performed version you have studied. You should consider:  the thoughts and feelings that the character express  the way the other characters react to them  the dramatic effect of the scene and its implications for the rest of the play. 1. Underline key words 2. Place synonyms next to difficult words to help you remember what they mean 2. Rewrite phrases if they are hard to understand to help you remember what they mean 3. PLAN YOUR ANSWER!

  5. There are many ways to plan your answer. You should already have a way of planning that you feel comfortable with. No one is better than the other but... Spider diagrams can be useful for visual Learners and people who need to write their ideas down before they can put them into an order. • Anger • Duty , loyalty, love • Other Capulet men look up to him • Honour • Prince & law see him as the same as Montagues • Pride Thoughts and feelings Other characters reactions 2 1 Lists can be useful if having clearly, visual structure helps you see your essay emerging. Tybalt • Benvolio sees him as a threat • Hate 3 1 Tybalt Thoughts... Hate’s Montagues Loves fighting Wants to show he honours his family Other characters Montagues are fearful Benvolio looks at his as a man of status and power- attempts to reason with him. Dramatic effect of scene on play 2 Whatever your choice, make sure you number your points to ensure your work is structured.

  6. This is how I would write my plan... Start by listing my ideas for each part of the question Then I would build up ideas around that list. the Prince Evidence from film Evidence from script Thoughts and feelings • Anger- his rebellious subjects Loud speaker He uses imperative verbs. Official seal displayed on uniform • Dominance- he knows his place and who he is! • Frustration- he has told them to stop quarrying before! Descends upon subjects from above suggestion higher power. Other characters reactions Dark menacing colours • Fearful- they stop fighting and listen in his presence. Angry expression Dramatic effect of scene on play • We now know the prince can alter other characters actions, he commands and people listen and do his bidding. • His decree sets up the idea that we may see more fighting later and if so, there will be death and tragedy.

  11. You have 40 minutes to write your answers. Formal supervision Under formal supervision, candidates must be under direct supervision at all times. Candidates should have clean copies of texts during the assessment period. Internet and e-mail access should not be permitted. It is advisable that the Centre records the date and time if the assessment, the name of the supervisor and keeps a log of any incidents which may occur during the course of the assessment.
