The Jury

George Wein

Beginning in 1950 with the opening of Storyville in Boston, Wein presented jazz in a setting respectful of both the musicians and the audience.  Since 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival has always reflected Wein's vision and grit, attracting music immortals as well as aspiring young artists to his stage. Along with writer Nate Chinen, Wein has recently authored his memoir, Myself Among Others: A Life in Music.  He joined Jerry Jazz Musician in a discussion on his life achievements, and on his unique perspective on the past, present and future of jazz.

Bruce Lundvall

Blue Note Records was a shadow of its former self when Bruce Lundvall arrived on the scene. The year was 1985 and the storied record label had lain dormant for the

latter half of the 1970s and first half of the 1980s. Rolling up his sleeves, Lundvall set about reviving Blue Note by remaining faithful to its towering legacy while simultaneously expanding upon it by signing diverse and modern icons such as Cassandra Wilson, Joe Lovano, Greg Osby, Jacky Terrasson, Dianne Reeves, Jason Moran and Norah Jones.

Fritz Thom

President of the International Jazz Festival Organisation. The IJFO is an umbrella organization to currently 13 leading jazz festivals worldwide. The history of IJFO goes back more than 20 years: Several European jazz festivals promoters met in Paris in 1982 to discuss a tour with Miles Davis, amongst them Fritz Thom, organizer of the Vienna Jazz Festival.

Howard Mandel

Howard Mandel has written about jazz, blues, new and unusual music for twenty-five years, publishing in Billboard, Down Beat, Jazziz, The Village Voice, The Wire,

and many other publications. Mandel is a two-time Winner of the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for music Journalism and is president of the Jazz Journalists Association.
