Welcome: IcebreakerPlease take a note card and have a seat • Spend a few minutes reflecting upon your quote’s meaning for you and your work • Participants mingle and find someone with the same colored note card, with a different quote number. • Introduce yourself and your role in your school district. • Take turns sharing your reflection regarding your quote with your partner • Participants mingle and find someone with a different colored card

  3. Icebreaker: • With your partner, discuss the following question: • What does “stewarding a vision” mean to you?

  4. Four Themes of Leadership • Four themes that are most critical to effective school leadership • Stewardship of a vision • Leading instructional improvement • Creating the instructional environment • Holding people accountable

  5. Stewardship of a Vision • The Principal sets the direction for their school • Keeps staff and students on course • Keeps the vision at the forefront • Models it through their action

  6. Leading Instructional Improvement • Principals have deep knowledge of instruction • Can develop the capacity of teachers and schools to improvement outcomes for all students • Learning is the focus of their work • Principals are lifelong learners • Leadership teams centered on instruction • Build teacher’s capacity • Analyze and use data regularly

  7. Hold People Accountable • Hold teachers accountable for student learning • Use data to monitor progress • Create schools that are continuous learning organizations • Also hold yourself accountable for student success

Creating an Instructional Environment • Responsible for culture of the school and individual classrooms • Form relationships with students, staff, families and community • Make time and provide structures for teachers to meet during the day • Address external situations and challenges that interfere with students’ ability to focus and learn • Assure a safe environment

  10. Assignment for Viewing • Participants should record key words, phrases, sentences and scenes they observe in the clip that reflect how the principals develop and guide a school vision.

  11. Activity • Count off into groups. • Each group will start at one of the posted charts. • On your chart, referring to your notes, each group should record responses to the question. When prompted, move to the next chart. • Each group will read and discuss the previous responses and add additional comments.

  12. Whole Group Debrief • In the same group, sit together for discussion. • Were there any … • New insights? • Reactions to what you saw? • Similarities to your situation? • Differences from your situation?
