  1. Solar Cooker Get your journal, sit down and DO NOT TALK!

  2. Alternative Fuel – Fossil Fuel – Non-Renewable Energy Resource – Renewable Energy Resource - Copy these words into your journal – leave 3 lines between each. DJE: 9/08/05

  3. Alternative Fuel • Any fuel other than petroleum based fuels. • Ex. Solar, natural gas, propane, alcohol, hydrogen

  4. Fossil Fuel • Energy that comes from fossilized plants and animals

  5. Non-Renewable Resources • Energy resources that are either unable to be replaced or occurs very slowly

  6. Renewable Energy Resource • Virtually inexhaustible energy source

  7. Draw a large "+" in your Journal to look like this Definition in your own words Picture Word Non-Examples Examples

  8. Solar – Greenhouse Effect – Absorption – Reflection – Copy these words into your journal – leave 3 lines between each. DJE: 9/12/05

  9. Solar • From the sun

  10. Greenhouse Effect • Trapping of heat resulting in higher temperatures

  11. Absorption • The process of light energy changing to heat energy occurring when light falls on an object and is taken into it.

  12. Reflection • To alter the path of light

  13. Definition in your own words Picture Word Non-Examples Examples

  14. Do Research on Solar Cookers • Web Sites • http://solarcooking.org/plans.htm • http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles/radabaugh30.html • http://www.knowledgehound.com/topics/solarcoo.htm

  15. Conduction – Convection – Radiant Energy – Glazing – Insulation – Copy these words into your journal – leave 3 lines between each. DJE: 9/13/05

  16. Conduction • Movement of heat through materials that are solid

  17. Convection • Movement of heat through liquids such as air and water

  18. Radiant Energy • The process of emitting energy in the form of waves

  19. Glazing • A clear material that lets light in but traps heat

  20. Insulation • Material used to reduce heat loss or gain. • Air is an excellent insulator

  23. Problem Solving Method • Define the problem • Generate possible solutions • Evaluate the solutions • Decide on a solution • Determine an action plan • Assess how well the solution/plan is working

  24. Define the problem • What is the problem? • To build a Solar Cooker that can reach 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

  25. Generate possible solutions • Brainstorm as a team what you need to solve this problem.

  26. Be sure to... • Avoid mind sets • Check to see if it meets the requirements

  27. Common Errors • Not understanding the problem • Worked too rapidly • Did not break complex problems into smaller parts

  28. Did not evaluate the reasonableness of the solution • Lacked confidence • Jumped to a conclusion without adequate thought

  29. Before we go any further… • What does X represent in Roman numerals? • What does VI represent in Roman numerals? • What number is IX?

  30. Using craft sticks, create the following equation... VIII + V = II (8 + 5 = 2)

  31. This equation in Roman numerals is 8 + 5 = 2, which is a false equation. VIII + V = II Moving only onecraft stick, change this to a true equation.

  32. Possible Answers • VIII – V = III (8 - 5=3) • VIII – V ≠ II (8 - 5 ≠ 2) • Many times, a problem can be solved in different ways.

  33. Again, use craft sticks for the numbers and signs of this equation: XI + I = X (11 + 1 = 10)

  34. In Roman numerals this equation is 11 + 1 = 10, which is a false equation. XI + I = X Without moving any craft sticks, make this a true equation.

  35. Answer • XI + I = X • Read the problem backwards!
