  1. aka TEXT QUERY SYSTEM Marty Harris Mgr TRD

  2. aka is a system designed to provide web-browser access to text resources as web pages on web sites, or from within relational databases with web access. aka consists of “PERL” based tools which connect various types of web accessible data sources to a simple Boolean search user interface. Aka can be used to search un-indexed web pages, web sites with existing search systems, or structured or unstructured text hosted on Getty servers. aka was developed by using a combination of Sybase, public domain, and Getty TRD, developed software. 7. aka was designed to support general user access to a broad range of web-based information repositories. The system models generally supported by the aka system are: Text-based boolean searching access to HTML pages hosted on unindexed remote web sites. Aka uses the Harvest spidering system to index remote sites automatically and provide a locally hosted searchable index. Text-based boolean searching access to Getty hosted, formatted text records. If requested by information providers, TRD/Getty has taken formatted text records provided by partners and has hosted free text searching functionality on Getty servers. Text-based boolean searching access to HTML pages hosted on indexed remote web sites which provide their own text searching interface. If requested by project partners, TRD/Getty has created custom PERL code which links the aka system to the partners existing text searching interface. THE aka MODEL

  8. Users can type a single or multi-word phrase into the aka search field and search all of the indexed text within the aka text databases aka retrieves each of the matching records and displays them to the user. A user can at any time during a text search use the AAT, ULAN, or TGN vocabularies to filter, expand or limit the query and modify the results. Aka SEARCH PROCESS

  9. The aka model is currently being used to support several GII projects: aka provides external searching access to four GII research databases currently online within the GII website. aka provides searching access to the public GII Faces of Los Angeles and the American Strategy projects. aka IMPLEMENTATIONS
