  2. WHEN A LIQUID SPILL OCCURS: • If there is a fire or medical attention is needed, contact your supervisor or call public safety at 911. Warn all people nearby and evacuate area as necessary. • Evaluate the toxicity, flammability and other hazardous properties of the liquid from a safe distance. If spill is flammable or volatile, IMMEDIATELY warn everyone, control all potential ignition sources and ventilate the area. • Stop the spill at the source (repair leaks, turn off source, plug or patch source). • Follow procedures below to contain and clean up the spilled liquid. Use the proper level of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) based on the characteristic of the liquid that has been spilled. • Only properly trained and certified individuals should attempt the cleanup of hazardous, volatile, toxic or unknown liquid Liquid spill

  3. Spill Cleanup Step 1 Identify Spilled Liquid • Verify Compatibility of spill cleanup material with the spilled liquid • WYK Universal spill kits are safe to be used on all liquids except (HF) hydrofluoric acid or compounds containing (HF) Identify

  4. Spill Cleanup Step 2 Open Spill Kit and unpack PPE • Open the spill kit and put on appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) before proceeding. • At a minimum you must use chemical resistant gloves and goggles

  5. Spill Cleanup Step 3 Immediately contain the liquid • Place socks and/or other sorbent materials around the spill to contain the liquid and prevent spreading • Liquids must be prevented from entering floor drains or sewers

  6. Spill Cleanup Step 4 Cordon off spill area • Cordon off the area to help prevent visitors and other employees from tracking or slipping on the liquids

  7. Spill Cleanup Step 5 Cover the spill • Cover the spill with sorbent pads, pillows and/or Super Sorbent particulate to reduce the vapors and soak up the liquid. • This helps to prevent volatile vapors from mitigating to an ignition source and starting a fire

  8. Spill Cleanup Step 6 Remove saturated sorbent • Remove saturated sorbent media and place into temporary disposal bag and label. • If liquid remains, put a new pad or pillow onto the spill area to soak up any remaining liquids • Place all pads and pillows into temporary disposal bag and label

  9. Spill Cleanup Step 7 Re-cover the entire area with Super Sorbent • Re-cover the spill area with Safety Sorbent Particulate • Sweep inward and place into temporary disposal bag. Repeat procedure until a completely dry floor is achieved. • Place all remaining sorbent media and PPE into disposal bag and label
