  2. The Rules for bad • Bad is an adjective used after sense verbs or after linking verbs. Example: James felt bad about the offensive joke he told.

  3. The Rules for badly • Badly is an adverb used after all other verbs. Example: The student behaved badly while the visiting professor was in the room.

  4. Other examples: • The food at the restaurant tastes bad. BUT • The chef cooks badly. Tastes is a sense verb. Cooks is an action verb.

  5. More examples: • Many children behave badly. BUT • The children are bad. Are is a linking verb. Behave is an action verb.

  6. Your turn! • Though Mary speaks fluently, she writes bad/badly because she does not observe closely or clearly. • There are many hopeful signs, although the situation looks bad/badly at the moment. • The computer started to act bad/badly as I typed my paper.
