  1. Appeasing Hitler

  2. What does Appeasing mean?? "...the policy of settling international quarrels by admitting and satisfying grievances through rational negotiation and compromise, thereby avoiding the resort to an armed conflict which would be expensive, bloody, and possibly dangerous." Giving the bully what he wants

  3. How did Hitler become so powerful? • After the Treaty of Versailles Germany was broken economically, militaristically and morally. • This made the German people desperate for a strong leader who could bring back German strength and pride. • As a strong, charismatic leader Hitler gained much of his power by building up the German economy and military during his early years (1933-1939). • As he blatantly broke rule after rule outlined in the Treaty of Versailles, he was regaining German pride for the broken population.

  4. How did they Appease Hitler? March 19th 1936 – Expanded their military, and re-militarized the Rhineland October 19th 1936 – Spanish Revolution began. Hitler joined the Civil War on the Fascist side to fight communism AND test his new army and techniques

  5. How did they Appease Hitler? April 10th 1938 – Hitler annexes Austria September 29th 1938 – Hitler takes control over the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia – MUNICH AGREEMENT SIGNED

  6. “Peace for our time.” - Neville Chamberlain

  7. Why Appeasement?? 1) Complete fear of another WAR

  8. Why Appeasement?? 2) Many countries believed the Treaty of Versailles was much too harsh. Germany is just taking back what is ‘rightfully’ theirs.

  9. OUTBREAK OF WAR!!!!!  On September the 1st 1939 Adolf Hitler breaks the Munich Agreement (big surprise) and invades Poland. Hitler wanted the Polish city of Danzig but the Polish government refused. Hitler then decided to use force to get the city Two days later (Sept 3rd) Britain and France declared war on Germany. On September 10th 1939, Canada declared war on Germany. This would be Canada’s first declaration of war against another country. Movie

  10. Part # 1: It is September 30th 1938. Pretend you are the leader of the country. In your groups of 2-3 decide whether the Munich Agreement was a good decision. Was appeasing Hitler the best policy for peace? Remember hindsight is 20/20. Explain and defend your answer. Part # 2: What would you have done differently to try and have “Peace in our time,” like so many people during this era wanted? If your representing Germany you are given another question. How would you have responded to intervention strategies such as a military blockade, financial sanctions or an intervention by the League of Nations?

  11. Financial sanctions • Military blockade • League of Nations intervention • Immediate war/invasion
