Art

Mr. Hobbs

What will we be learning by doing our next project we will

What will we be learning by doing our next project? We will:

  • Examine drawings, stencils and silkscreens done by various artists

  • Create our own negative image stencil design

  • Learn how to set up a basic screen printing station

  • Learn how to handle materials properly

  • Silkscreen onto papers and fabric using the indirect stencil method

What is silkscreening

What is Silkscreening?

  • Silkscreen printing has a history closely intertwined with stencil use.

  • To create a screen print, a stencil is used to block out certain areas of the screen while other areas remain open to let ink pass through.

  • Silkscreening is a simple, dynamic way of creating multiple images.

Examples of silkscreening

Examples of silkscreening

  • Keypads of cellphones

  • Calculators

  • Hats

  • Clothing

  • If you have clothing with any logo or design, you’ve probably been screened!

Let s look at your clothing

Let’s look at your clothing…

  • Is the ink puffy or flat to the fabric?

  • Has the T-Shirt been washed many times or is it brand new?

  • How is the design positioned on the clothing?

Examples of stencils

Examples of Stencils

  • In order to create a silkscreened image, a stencil must be made first.

An introduction to silkscreening

  • This is probably the earliest known stencil made over 10,000 years ago, called Cave of the Hands.

  • The composition was made by hollowing out bones to make pipes that were then used for spraying the paint on the wall blocked by the hand.
