  4. Section one – Wednesday 9/6 • Figurative Language Challenge • How many pieces of figurative language can you find and identify from the first four vignettes?

  5. “Hairs” Writing assignment • Choose one of the following features and model Cisneros’ writing style by writing your own vignette. • Hair • Eyes • Nose • Mouth/Teeth • You must include: • At least 10 lines • At least 3 pieces of imagery • At least 1 simile • At least 1 metaphor • At least 1 personification • At least 1 repetition • At least 1 alliteration

  9. READING QUIZ #1 • When you are finished with the quiz, you have the rest of today to continue working on your Section 2 page. • Remember to pick one of the vignettes and complete a SIFT analysis on your page.

  10. MONDAY 9/11- JOURNAL #4 In what areas of your life are you most free to do what you like? In what areas of your life do you have the least freedom? Consider the roles gender, race, religion, education, class, age, and upbringing play in limiting an individual’s personal freedom.

  12. “Those who don’t” – us vs. them • Pick a side of the vignette to focus on: us or them. • Retell the story, in comic format, from your chosen perspective. • Be sure that both your images and your text work together to create your “new” vignette.

  13. Reflection on the back… • With today being the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, please consider… • How do you think America has changed since 9/11/2001? List as many ways as you can think of. • In what ways can you relate these changes to Multicultural Literature? In other words, how do the changes in our nation have to do with things like identity, culture, stereotypes, prejudice, community, acceptance, etc.?

  15. WEDNESDAY 9/13 – journal #5 How is growing into a teenage body (physically, mentally and emotionally) like moving into a new house/apartment? Compare the experiences of moving into a new house/apartment to the experiences of being a teenager.

  17. THURSDAY 9/14 – JOURNAL #6 • Brainstorm a list of both positive and negative traits that you have seen in Esperanza so far. • Explain WHY for each trait you write down.

Reading quiz #2 • When you are finished with your quiz, please turn it in. • You will then work on the Letter of Recommendation for Esperanza. • Read the directions on the handout carefully. • Be sure that you are addressing both positives and negatives. • Make connections to evidence from the text in “The First Job.” • Your letter should be at least one page handwritten (single spaced) and contain at least four distinct paragraphs. • It’s a letter, so be sure you also have a proper, formal saluatation and closer.

What should be different? Do you have brothers, sisters, cousins, etc. who are treated differently from you because of gender? Explain.

  33. ESPERANZA’S LETTER HOME • Imagine that you are Esperanza, after leaving Mango Street. • Write a letter home. • Follow the directions on the handout.

Wednesday 10/4 – group review • Review The House on Mango Street by categorizing each vignette with the following: • The 4 Ways We Get to Know Esperanza: • Personally – she speaks of goals and experiences. • Family – She describes them, their behaviors, and their impact. • Friendships – Her friendships and peers shape her personality. • Surroundings – The strangers and neighborhood shape her view of the world. • Then, choose the best example (one vignette) for each of the four categories, and fill out the graphic organizer. • Write the two most important facts you learn about Esperanza’spersonality in the vignette. • Explain how these facts shape who Esperanza is/how she feels/how she acts.
