  2. What is Ergonomics? • Application that consists of scientific principles, methods and data drawn from a variety of disciplines • In which people play a significant role • It also plays a crucial role in education

  3. Ergonomics • FundamentalAim • Safety • Well-being • Performance of humanbeings

  4. Anthropometry

  5. Anthropometry • Deals with the measurements of the dimensions of the body and other physical characteristics. • Plays an important role in; • IndustrialDesign • ClothingDesign • Ergonomics • Architecture

  6. Child Anthropometry • Childrenaresmallerversions of adults • Theirantropomentricdatasdifferfromadults, sotheirequipmentsneedto be adjustedduetotheirmeasurements

  7. Requirements of the children ergonomy • Each child is unique • In order to eliminate risks caused during children’s growth and development, ergonomy is essential • MSD(Musculoskeletal Disorders)

  8. MSD(Musculoskeletal Disorders) • Computerized workplace are the source of MSD • It develops chronic pain if their workstations are set up without proper attention to ergonomics • A small change, such as re-positioning the screen or keyboard, or using an adjustable chair, can often eliminate the problem.

  9. ErgonomicsforChildren in theField of ComputerUsage • Computerusagebecomewidespreadamongchildren in recentdecades, sotheergonomicdesign of theequipmentsgainmoreimportance. • Mainly, MSD is themain problem duetocomputerusage • Itresults in chronicpainandirregularity in thedevelopment of childs’ skeletalsystemduetothelongworkinghoursandawkwardpostures.

  10. One Size Fits All ?

  11. “One Size FitsAll ! ” • Minimum usage of computersforanychildren is 11.5 minuteswherethemaximum is 101.9 minutes. (rangingupto 10 hours) • Longtimesspend in front of computers • The equipments (chair and table) that fit adults are used to children • However, one size DOES NOT fit all • Childrenneedtocranetheirneckstoviewmonitors, awkwardelbowandwristanglesoccur • Thereforetheyfacelots of musculardisordersandirregular bone development

  12. Features of our ergonomic chair and laptop table • Schoolchildren have the most fluctuating body dimensions • Adjustable furniture is preferred, due to the different dimensions of the body • Suitable for the child’s anthropometric data as well as their varying work postures

  13. Female Data

  14. Male Data

  15. Measurements

  16. Chair Design • Adjustable seat height • Adjustable backrest • Lower back is supported by backrest • Breathable and padded fabric • Able to swivel • 5 wheels (can be locked) • Flexible armrest (e.g. bus)

  17. Chair Design 90 º elbow angle General view 90 º knee angle

  18. Possible Adjustments Original position Back adjustment Height adjustment

  19. Laptop Table Design • Adjustable height (pneumatic system) • Ergonomic palm rest • Room for ergonomic keyboard • Mousepads attached for both left and right hand users • Adjustable inclined laptop plane • 4 wheels (can be locked)

  20. Table Design Adjustable screen height Adjustable height for (extra) keyboard
